CVE-2022-46334
Executive Summary
CVE-2022-46334 is a local privilege escalation vulnerability in Proofpoint Enterprise Protection (PPS/PoD) where the unprivileged pps service account can escalate to root privileges due to unnecessary file and directory permissions. All versions 8.19.0 and below are affected. Successful exploitation could allow a low-privileged attacker who has already compromised the pps user to achieve complete root-level control over the email security appliance, potentially intercepting or altering mail flow.

Technical Analysis
The vulnerability class is insecure file/directory permissions (also referred to as "incorrect default permissions" in some taxonomies — note: the CNA did not publish a CWE, but the mechanism aligns with improper permission assignment). The root cause, per the NVD description, is that the Proofpoint Enterprise Protection product grants the pps user "unnecessary permissions" on files or system resources. This creates a path where a user operating under the pps identity can write to or modify files that should be root-owned, or can execute binaries or scripts in privileged contexts.
The attack surface is local — exploitation requires that the attacker already has a shell or command execution context under the pps account. This could be obtained via any other vulnerability that yields low-privileged code execution, a misconfigured service, or a separate web application flaw in the Proofpoint management interface. Once a foothold is established as pps, the attacker can inspect the file system to locate writable directories, scripts, cron jobs, or binary files that are executed later by a root-level process.
Specific technical details regarding which exact directories, file paths, or binaries are misconfigured are not available in the public description. Proofpoint has not published a detailed advisory, and no CVE-specific patch exists. The insufficient technical detail available prevents precise code-level analysis; however, the vulnerability class is well understood: a non-privileged OS user with excessive write permissions on a component that eventually executes with elevated privileges enables a classic "write → wait for root execution → execute arbitrary code as root" chain.
Exploitation Scenarios
No public PoC is available; the attack chain is inferred from the vulnerability class.
Reconnaissance / target identification: An attacker must first obtain a foothold on the Proofpoint appliance as the
ppsuser. This could be through exploiting another service, phishing credentials, or abusing a web-facing management interface. Once shell access asppsis achieved, the attacker enumerates the file system for writable files (e.g.,find / -writable -type for checking cron directories), looking for scripts or binaries that the root account executes periodically or during routine operations.Flaw triggering: The attacker identifies a file or directory owned by root but writable by the
ppsgroup/user (or a root-executed script located in a directory writable bypps). The attacker modifies or replaces that file with a malicious payload — typically a shell script or a compiled binary that will execute asetuidshell or add an SSH key to root's account.Payload / execution method (vulnerability-class level): The payload is placed in a location where it will be executed by a root-level process at a predictable time (e.g., a cron job, a service restart, or a software update script). The payload executes with root privileges, giving the attacker full control.
Post-exploitation impact: With root access on the mail security gateway, the attacker can tamper with mail filtering rules, exfiltrate quarantined email, modify TLS certificates to intercept TLS traffic, pivot to internal networks, destroy log evidence, and use the appliance as a persistent, privileged foothold inside the enterprise DMZ.
Impact Assessment
- CVSS Score: 7.8 (High) — consistent with a local privilege escalation that yields root.
- Confidentiality: High — root access enables reading all email content, quarantine stores, and configuration secrets.
- Integrity: High — an attacker can modify mail rules, permitting malicious content through the filter and disabling security controls.
- Availability: High — the attacker can shut down the appliance or cause denial of service to mail flow.
- Affected systems: All Proofpoint Enterprise Protection (PPS/PoD) versions 8.19.0 and below. Proofpoint Protection Server (PPS) on-premises deployments and Proofpoint on Demand (PoD) cloud instances are both named in the description.
- Blast radius: Because the appliance sits as a centralized gateway for all inbound/outbound email, a root-level compromise is highly damaging — it intercepts every message entering or leaving the organization. The attack requires prior access as
pps(a low-privileged local account), which moderately raises the bar but does not eliminate the risk because such footholds frequently exist through other CVEs, weak service credentials, or misconfigurations.

Mitigation & Patch Guidance
Patch confidence: 0/4 — UNPATCHED. No patch evidence exists from any tracked source. Proofpoint has not released a security advisory or fixed version.
Immediate mitigations:
- Restrict the
ppsuser to a minimal shell (e.g.,/sbin/nologin) wherever possible, limiting interactive access. - Audit the entire file system for files that are writable by the
ppsuser and owned by root:find / -user root -writable -ls. Manually tighten permissions on any hits to0755owner-root files. - Review all cron jobs and systemd timers for references to scripts located in directories writable by
pps. - Enforce host-based intrusion detection and file integrity monitoring (e.g., OSSEC, Wazuh FIM) on all binaries and scripts executed with root privileges.
- Limit local shell access to the appliance; require SSH access via jump host with MFA.
- Restrict the
Patch/upgrade steps:
- Monitor Proofpoint advisories. When a fixed version is released (expected to be >8.19.0), upgrade the PPS/PoD instance immediately during a maintenance window.
- Until then, no patched version exists; do not assume later Proofpoint versions are safe unless the vendor explicitly notes a fix.
Long-term hardening:
- Follow the principle of least privilege for all service accounts;
ppsshould only be able to read its own application directory — never write to system locations. - Implement mandatory access control (SELinux/AppArmor) on the appliance if the platform allows.
- Segment the mail gateway from general internal networks to limit lateral movement if the appliance is compromised.
- Actively monitor the local security bulletin for this CVE and subscribe to Proofpoint's security advisory RSS feed.
- Follow the principle of least privilege for all service accounts;

No known threat actor campaigns or exploit-in-the-wild evidence has been observed for this CVE at the time of writing. EPSS score (0.00165) indicates low exploitation likelihood, but the absence of a patch makes this a latent risk for any organization running affected versions.
