CVE-2023-40513
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-40513 is a directory traversal vulnerability in LG Simple Editor’s UserManageController.getImageByFilename method. An authenticated attacker can bypass the authentication mechanism and read arbitrary files from the SYSTEM context, leading to information disclosure. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.5 (Medium) and is currently unpatched. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is available, but the risk is elevated due to the ability to bypass authentication.
Note: This vulnerability is not related to any open-source package ecosystem (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby), so no supply chain analysis is included.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – but authentication bypass makes it effectively none.
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: High (C:H)
- Integrity Impact: None (I:N)
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
- Base Score: 6.5 (Medium)
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability allows reading sensitive system files (e.g., configuration, credentials) but does not enable code execution or data modification.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The flaw resides in the getImageByFilename method of the UserManageController class. The application fails to sanitize user-supplied path input before using it in file read operations. An attacker can supply a path like ../../windows/system32/config/sam to traverse directories and read arbitrary files.
The authentication bypass mechanism is not fully detailed, but ZDI notes that the existing authentication can be circumvented, meaning an unauthenticated attacker could exploit this vulnerability. The file read occurs with SYSTEM privileges, maximizing the impact.
Root Cause: Lack of path validation (CWE-22). The application does not check for ../ sequences or enforce a base directory.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
public class UserManageController {
public void getImageByFilename(String filename) {
String path = "/images/" + filename; // No validation
File file = new File(path);
// Read and return file content
}
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
public class UserManageController {
private static final String BASE_DIR = "/images/";
public void getImageByFilename(String filename) {
// Normalize and validate path
String normalized = Paths.get(BASE_DIR, filename).normalize().toString();
if (!normalized.startsWith(BASE_DIR)) {
throw new SecurityException("Invalid path");
}
File file = new File(normalized);
// Read and return file content
}
}
No official patch exists; the above is a recommended fix.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites: Network access to LG Simple Editor instance. Authentication bypass may be required.
Exploit Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint (e.g.,
/UserManageController/getImageByFilename). - Send a crafted request with a path traversal payload:
GET /UserManageController/getImageByFilename?filename=../../windows/system32/config/sam HTTP/1.1 Host: target - The server returns the contents of the SAM file (or other sensitive files).
No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual example.
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for requests containing
../or..\\in thefilenameparameter. - Alert on access to sensitive system paths (e.g.,
/etc/passwd,C:\Windows\System32).
Hardening:
- Apply input validation and path normalization.
- Restrict file read operations to a specific directory.
- Implement strong authentication that cannot be bypassed.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block path traversal patterns.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with
filenameparameter containing../or..\\. - File Access: Unauthorized reads of files like
/etc/shadow,C:\Windows\System32\config\SAM, or application configuration files. - Logs: Application logs showing
getImageByFilenamecalls with suspicious paths.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable or restrict access to the
UserManageControllerendpoint if not required. - Implement a WAF rule to block path traversal patterns.
- Monitor logs for exploitation attempts.
Long-Term Fix:
- Apply input validation and path normalization in the application code.
- Use a secure file access library that prevents directory traversal.
- Vendor LG should release a security patch; until then, consider isolating the application.
Workarounds:
- Place the application behind a reverse proxy with strict path filtering.
- Use file system permissions to limit what the application can read.
