CVE-2023-4730
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-4730 is a critical missing authorization vulnerability in the LadiApp WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 4.3). The plugin fails to perform a capability check in the init_endpoint() function, which is hooked via WordPress's init action. This allows any unauthenticated attacker to modify sensitive plugin settings, most notably the ladipage_key option. By altering this key, an attacker can create new posts on the WordPress site and inject arbitrary malicious web scripts (stored XSS). The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 5.3 (Medium) but poses a significant risk due to the ease of exploitation and potential for persistent compromise.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed through the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who installed LadiApp from the WordPress dashboard or via direct download are at risk. Since no official patch has been released, the supply chain risk is elevated—users must rely on manual mitigation or removal.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component remains the same.
- Confidentiality (C): None (N) – No data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited modification of settings and post creation.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium (5.3). However, the ability to inject persistent XSS and create new posts elevates the real-world risk, especially for sites with high user trust.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the init_endpoint() function within the LadiApp plugin. This function is registered to run on every WordPress page load via the init hook, without any authentication or authorization checks. The function processes incoming requests and allows modification of plugin options, including the ladipage_key setting.
An attacker can send a crafted HTTP request to any WordPress page (e.g., /?ladipage_key=attacker_controlled_value) to overwrite the key. Once the key is changed, the plugin uses it to create new posts with attacker-controlled content. This can be leveraged to inject JavaScript payloads that execute when other users view the posts, leading to stored XSS attacks.
The lack of a nonce or capability check means the attack is trivial to execute and does not require any prior access to the WordPress admin panel.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (LadiApp <= 4.3):
function init_endpoint() {
if (isset($_GET['ladipage_key'])) {
update_option('ladipage_key', sanitize_text_field($_GET['ladipage_key']));
// Additional logic to create posts using the new key
}
}
add_action('init', 'init_endpoint');
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function init_endpoint() {
if (isset($_GET['ladipage_key'])) {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized');
}
check_admin_referer('ladipage_nonce');
update_option('ladipage_key', sanitize_text_field($_GET['ladipage_key']));
}
}
add_action('init', 'init_endpoint');
The patched version adds a capability check (current_user_can('manage_options')) and a nonce verification to ensure only authorized administrators can modify the setting.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
- Setup: Deploy a WordPress instance with LadiApp plugin version 4.3.
- Exploit: Send a GET request to the WordPress site with the
ladipage_keyparameter:GET /?ladipage_key=attacker_controlled_key HTTP/1.1 Host: target-wordpress-site.com - Verify: The plugin will update the option and create a new post with attacker-controlled content. To inject XSS, use a payload like:
GET /?ladipage_key=<script>alert('XSS')</script> HTTP/1.1 - Impact: Any user visiting the newly created post will execute the injected script.
Blue Team (Detection & Response)
- Monitor HTTP logs for requests containing
ladipage_keyparameter from unknown IPs. - Check WordPress options table for unexpected
ladipage_keyvalues. - Review recently created posts for suspicious content or scripts.
- Implement Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block requests with
ladipage_keyfrom unauthenticated users.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with
ladipage_keyparameter in the query string. - File: Modified
wp_optionstable entry forladipage_key. - Behavior: Unexpected new posts created by the LadiApp plugin without admin action.
- Log: WordPress debug log entries showing
init_endpointfunction calls from non-admin IPs.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable or remove the LadiApp plugin until an official patch is released.
- Manually patch the vulnerable code by adding capability checks (see patched code above).
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block requests containing
ladipage_keyfrom unauthenticated users.
Long-term:
- Monitor the plugin's official repository for updates.
- Consider replacing LadiApp with a maintained alternative.
- Implement regular security audits for all WordPress plugins.
