CVE-2023-48909
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-48909 is a critical code injection vulnerability in Jave2 version 3.3.1, a Java wrapper for FFmpeg. The flaw allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code by injecting malicious commands through the FFmpeg function. This vulnerability arises from improper sanitization of user-supplied input passed to FFmpeg, enabling command injection. The CVSS score is currently unassigned, but the impact is severe due to the potential for remote code execution. No official patch has been released, and exploitation is likely in the wild.

Supply Chain & Package Security
Jave2 is distributed as a Java library (Maven artifact). The vulnerability affects the core library, and any application using Jave2 3.3.1 is at risk. Since no patch exists, organizations must rely on workarounds such as input validation or replacing the library.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the FFmpeg class of Jave2, which constructs command-line arguments for FFmpeg. When user input is passed to methods like addArgument() or directly to the FFmpeg command builder, it is not properly sanitized. An attacker can inject shell metacharacters (e.g., ;, |, &&) to execute arbitrary commands on the host system.
Root Cause: The library uses Runtime.getRuntime().exec() or ProcessBuilder to execute FFmpeg, but it does not escape or validate input arguments. This allows an attacker to break out of the intended command and run arbitrary OS commands.
Attack Vector: An attacker can provide a malicious input string to a Jave2-based application, such as a video conversion request. For example, setting a filename to "; malicious_command ;" would execute the injected command.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Jave2 3.3.1):
// Vulnerable: Directly appends user input to command
FFmpeg ffmpeg = new FFmpeg("/path/to/ffmpeg");
FFmpegExecutor executor = new FFmpegExecutor(ffmpeg);
FFmpegCommand command = new FFmpegCommand();
command.addArgument(userInput); // No sanitization
executor.execute(command);
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
// Patched: Sanitize input or use argument list
FFmpeg ffmpeg = new FFmpeg("/path/to/ffmpeg");
FFmpegExecutor executor = new FFmpegExecutor(ffmpeg);
FFmpegCommand command = new FFmpegCommand();
String sanitizedInput = userInput.replaceAll("[^a-zA-Z0-9_\\-\\.]", "");
command.addArgument(sanitizedInput);
executor.execute(command);

Detection Steps:
- Monitor for unusual FFmpeg process arguments containing shell metacharacters.
- Implement input validation on all parameters passed to Jave2.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block command injection patterns.
Lab Setup:
# Vulnerable application setup
docker run -d -p 8080:8080 --name jave2-vuln jave2:3.3.1
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with parameters containing
;,|,&&, or backticks. - Process: FFmpeg processes with unusual arguments like
-ifollowed by shell commands. - File: Unexpected files created in
/tmpor application directories. - Logs: Application logs showing errors like "Invalid argument" or "Command not found".

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Implement strict input validation for all parameters passed to Jave2. Whitelist allowed characters (e.g., alphanumeric, underscores, hyphens).
- Short-term: Replace Jave2 with an alternative library that properly sanitizes FFmpeg arguments, such as
ffmpeg-cli-wrapper. - Long-term: Monitor for official patches from the Jave2 maintainers. If none are released, consider forking the project and applying the fix.
- Compensating Controls: Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block command injection patterns. Run Jave2 in a sandboxed environment with minimal privileges.
