CVE-2023-52081
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-52081 is a low-severity security advisory affecting ffcss, a CLI tool for applying and configuring Firefox CSS themes. The vulnerability resides in the lookupPreprocess() function, which is designed to sanitize user input by stripping characters matching the regex [-_ .] (dash, underscore, dot, space). However, due to the use of late Unicode normalization (NFKD), an attacker can bypass this filter by supplying equivalent Unicode characters (e.g., U+FE4D ﹍ for underscore _). This allows the re-introduction of the filtered characters after normalization, enabling theme name lookups that bypass the intended sanitization.
The impact is limited to theme search functionality (case-insensitive, ignoring dashes, underscores, and dots), and no remote code execution or data breach is possible. The vulnerability is fixed in version 0.2.0, and no known workarounds exist.

Supply Chain & Package Security
ffcss is distributed as an npm package. The vulnerability affects versions prior to 0.2.0. Users should update to the latest version to mitigate the risk. No malicious packages or typosquatting have been reported in connection with this CVE.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 5.3 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: None
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
The low integrity impact reflects the ability to manipulate theme search results, potentially leading to the application of an unintended theme. No sensitive data is exposed, and no system compromise is possible.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The lookupPreprocess() function is intended to normalize user input for theme name matching. It performs the following steps:
- Character Filtering: Removes characters matching the regex
[-_ .](dash, underscore, dot, space). - Case Insensitivity: Converts the string to lowercase.
- Unicode Normalization: Applies NFKD normalization to decompose Unicode characters.
The flaw is that the character filtering occurs before Unicode normalization. An attacker can supply a Unicode character that, after NFKD normalization, decomposes into one of the filtered characters. For example:
- U+FE4D (﹍) normalizes to
_(underscore). - U+2010 (‐) normalizes to
-(dash). - U+2024 (․) normalizes to
.(dot). - U+00A0 ( ) normalizes to space.
Thus, the input ﹍test﹍theme would pass the filter (since ﹍ is not in [-_ .]), but after normalization becomes _test_theme, which matches a theme name containing underscores.
This bypass allows an attacker to search for themes that would otherwise be hidden or to trigger unintended theme application if the search logic is used elsewhere.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (pre-0.2.0):
function lookupPreprocess(str) {
// Filter first, then normalize
return str.replace(/[-_ .]/g, '').toLowerCase().normalize('NFKD');
}
Patched Code (0.2.0):
function lookupPreprocess(str) {
// Normalize first, then filter
return str.normalize('NFKD').replace(/[-_ .]/g, '').toLowerCase();
}
The fix ensures that Unicode normalization occurs before character filtering, so any decomposed characters are properly removed.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- ffcss version < 0.2.0 installed.
- A Firefox theme with underscores in its name (e.g.,
my_theme).
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify a theme name containing a filtered character (e.g.,
my_theme). - Replace the filtered character with its Unicode equivalent:
_→ U+FE4D (﹍)-→ U+2010 (‐).→ U+2024 (․)→ U+00A0 ( )
- Execute the search command:
ffcss search "my﹍theme" - The tool will return results for
my_theme, bypassing the intended filter.
Proof of Concept:
# Install vulnerable version
npm install -g ffcss@0.1.0
# Search using Unicode bypass
ffcss search "test﹍theme"
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual Unicode characters in ffcss command-line arguments.
- Look for NFKD normalization bypass attempts in logs.
Mitigation:
- Immediately update to ffcss 0.2.0 or later.
- If update is not possible, restrict access to the ffcss CLI to trusted users only.
Hunting:
- Search logs for patterns like
%EF%BC%8D(URL-encoded fullwidth hyphen) or other Unicode equivalents. - Use the following Sigma rule to detect suspicious ffcss usage.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Unicode Characters:
- U+FE4D (﹍) – replaces underscore
- U+2010 (‐) – replaces hyphen
- U+2024 (․) – replaces dot
- U+00A0 ( ) – replaces space
- Command-Line Patterns:
ffcss search *﹍*ffcss search *‐*ffcss search *․*
- Log Entries:
- Any ffcss command containing the above Unicode characters.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Action:
- Upgrade to ffcss version 0.2.0 or later:
npm update -g ffcss
Workarounds:
- No official workarounds exist. Restrict CLI access to trusted users.
Long-Term:
- Implement input validation after Unicode normalization in all string processing functions.
- Conduct a code review for similar normalization bypass vulnerabilities.
