CVE-2023-6582
Executive Summary
CVE-2023-6582 is a Sensitive Information Exposure vulnerability in the ElementsKit Elementor addons plugin for WordPress. The flaw resides in the ekit_widgetarea_content function, which fails to properly check post status permissions. This allows unauthenticated attackers to retrieve the content of posts that are in draft, private, or pending review status, bypassing the intended access controls. The vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 3.0.3. The CVSS score is 5.3 (Medium), with a low EPSS score of 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood in the wild. However, the lack of a patch and the simplicity of exploitation make it a significant concern for WordPress sites using this plugin.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository and third-party marketplaces. Since no patch has been released, users must manually apply mitigations or remove the plugin. The risk is amplified by the plugin's popularity among Elementor users.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 5.3 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (exposure of post content)
- Integrity Impact: None
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability is easy to exploit and can leak sensitive content, but it does not allow code execution or data modification.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is located in the ekit_widgetarea_content function within the ElementsKit plugin. This function is used to render widget areas via AJAX requests. The flaw occurs because the function does not verify the post status before returning content. Specifically, it retrieves posts based on user-supplied parameters without checking if the post is published, draft, private, or pending review.
Root Cause: The function uses get_post() or similar WordPress functions without a status check. By default, WordPress allows querying posts of any status if the user has the read_private_posts capability, but unauthenticated users should not be able to access non-public posts. The function fails to enforce this.
Attack Vector: An unauthenticated attacker can send a crafted AJAX request to the WordPress REST API endpoint that triggers ekit_widgetarea_content. By manipulating parameters (e.g., post_id), they can retrieve the content of any post, including drafts and private posts.
Impact: Leakage of sensitive information such as unpublished blog posts, private pages, or pending review content. This could include business secrets, personal data, or early product announcements.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no official patch exists, the vulnerable code is present in all versions up to 3.0.3. The following is a conceptual comparison:
Vulnerable Code (simplified):
function ekit_widgetarea_content() {
$post_id = $_POST['post_id'];
$post = get_post($post_id);
// No status check
echo $post->post_content;
wp_die();
}
Patched Code (hypothetical):
function ekit_widgetarea_content() {
$post_id = $_POST['post_id'];
$post = get_post($post_id);
if ( $post && $post->post_status !== 'publish' && ! current_user_can( 'read_private_posts' ) ) {
wp_die( 'Access denied' );
}
echo $post->post_content;
wp_die();
}
The patched version adds a check for post status and user capabilities before outputting content.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with ElementsKit plugin version <= 3.0.3 installed and active.
- Knowledge of a valid post ID (can be enumerated via other means).
Exploit Steps:
- Identify the AJAX action used by ElementsKit. Typically, it is
ekit_widgetarea_content. - Send a POST request to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith the action and post ID. - Retrieve the content of a draft or private post.
Example cURL command:
curl -X POST https://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php \
-d "action=ekit_widgetarea_content&post_id=123"
Expected Output: The content of the post with ID 123, even if it is in draft status.
Blue Team (Detection & Mitigation)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith theaction=ekit_widgetarea_contentparameter. - Look for requests with
post_idvalues that correspond to non-public posts. - Use the detection rules provided below.
Mitigation:
- Disable the ElementsKit plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests to
ekit_widgetarea_contentfrom unauthenticated users. - Apply a temporary code fix by adding a status check in the plugin's functions.php or via a custom plugin.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=ekit_widgetarea_content. - Repeated requests with varying
post_idparameters.
- POST requests to
- File IOCs:
- Log entries showing access to draft/private posts via AJAX.
- Behavioral IOCs:
- Unauthenticated users retrieving content that should be restricted.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin if not critical to operations.
- Apply a virtual patch using a WAF to block unauthenticated requests to
ekit_widgetarea_content. - Monitor logs for exploitation attempts.
Long-term Fix:
- Wait for the vendor to release a patched version. As of now, no patch is available.
- Consider replacing the plugin with an alternative that has similar functionality but is actively maintained.
Workaround Code:
Add the following to your theme's functions.php or a custom plugin to block the vulnerable function:
add_action('wp_ajax_ekit_widgetarea_content', function() {
wp_die('Access denied');
}, 1);
add_action('wp_ajax_nopriv_ekit_widgetarea_content', function() {
wp_die('Access denied');
}, 1);
