CVE-2024-10532
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-10532 is a missing authorization vulnerability in the Bard Extra WordPress plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 1.2.7. The flaw resides in the bardxtra_import_xml() function, which lacks a proper capability check. This allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to import arbitrary demo data into the WordPress site. While the CVSS score is 4.3 (Medium), the impact is limited to unauthorized data modification, not data theft or remote code execution. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, and the vendor has not released a patch.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed through the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin’s update channel and consider disabling the plugin until a patched version is released. No known supply chain compromise has been reported.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 4.3 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Subscriber)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: None
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability allows low-privileged users to import demo data, which could overwrite existing content or introduce malicious configurations. However, it does not lead to full site compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The Bard Extra plugin provides additional functionality for the Bard WordPress theme. The vulnerable function bardxtra_import_xml() is intended to import demo content (posts, pages, widgets, etc.) via an XML file. The function is registered as an AJAX action for authenticated users but fails to verify that the user has the necessary administrative capabilities (e.g., import or manage_options). As a result, any authenticated user, including subscribers, can trigger the import process.
The import process typically reads an XML file from a remote URL or local upload and processes it using WordPress’s built-in import functionality. An attacker could craft a malicious XML file containing arbitrary content, including posts with malicious shortcodes or scripts, and import it into the site. This could lead to stored XSS if the imported content is not properly sanitized.
Key Code Path (Conceptual):
add_action('wp_ajax_bardxtra_import_xml', 'bardxtra_import_xml');
function bardxtra_import_xml() {
// Missing capability check
// Process XML import
}
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (bardxtra_import_xml function):
function bardxtra_import_xml() {
// No capability check
$file = $_FILES['xml_file'];
// Process import...
}
Patched Code (Expected):
function bardxtra_import_xml() {
if (!current_user_can('import')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized');
}
$file = $_FILES['xml_file'];
// Process import...
}
The patch should add a capability check using current_user_can('import') or current_user_can('manage_options') to restrict the function to administrators or users with import permissions.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress site with Bard Extra plugin <= 1.2.7
- Valid subscriber account (or higher)
Steps:
- Log in as a subscriber.
- Craft a malicious XML file containing demo content (e.g., a post with a JavaScript payload).
- Send a POST request to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith actionbardxtra_import_xmland the XML file. - The imported content will be added to the site.
Example cURL Command:
curl -X POST \
-c cookies.txt \
-b cookies.txt \
-F "action=bardxtra_import_xml" \
-F "xml_file=@malicious.xml" \
https://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
Malicious XML Example (Conceptual):

Malicious Post

Blue Team (Detection & Defense)
Detection:
- Monitor AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith actionbardxtra_import_xmlfrom non-admin users. - Look for unusual XML file uploads by subscribers.
- Check for unexpected new posts or pages created by low-privilege users.
Defense:
- Immediately disable the Bard Extra plugin until a patch is available.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=bardxtra_import_xmlfrom non-admin users. - Restrict file upload capabilities for subscriber roles using a security plugin.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=bardxtra_import_xml - XML file uploads from subscriber-level users
- POST requests to
- File System:
- Unexpected XML files in uploads directory
- New posts/pages with suspicious content
- Logs:
- WordPress debug log entries showing import errors from non-admin users
- Apache/Nginx access logs with
admin-ajax.phpPOST requests from subscriber IPs

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the Bard Extra plugin until a patched version is released.
- Review user roles and remove any unnecessary subscriber accounts.
- Audit site content for any unauthorized imports.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor must release a patched version that adds a capability check (e.g.,
current_user_can('import')) to thebardxtra_import_xml()function. - Users should update to the latest version once available.
Workaround:
- Use a security plugin to restrict AJAX actions based on user role.
- Add a custom code snippet to functions.php:
add_action('wp_ajax_bardxtra_import_xml', function() {
if (!current_user_can('import')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized');
}
}, 0);
