CVE-2024-32138
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-32138 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the KaizenCoders Short URL plugin for WordPress, affecting versions through 1.6.8. This flaw allows an attacker to inject arbitrary web scripts or HTML via a crafted URL, which is then reflected back to the victim's browser. The vulnerability requires user interaction (e.g., clicking a malicious link) and can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement within the context of the vulnerable WordPress site. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code is available.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed through the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin's page for updates and consider removing or replacing the plugin if no patch is forthcoming. The plugin is not distributed via NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby ecosystems.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 7.1 (High)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network – The vulnerability can be exploited remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required – The victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed – The impact extends beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low – Limited ability to modify content.
- Availability (A): None – No impact on availability.
Threat Level: High. While user interaction is required, the lack of a patch and the widespread use of WordPress make this a significant risk for unpatched sites.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the Short URL plugin's handling of user-supplied input within URL parameters. The plugin fails to properly sanitize or escape input before reflecting it back in the HTTP response. This allows an attacker to craft a URL containing malicious JavaScript code. When a victim visits this URL, the injected script executes in the context of the victim's browser session on the WordPress site.
Root Cause: The plugin uses $_GET or $_REQUEST parameters directly in output without proper escaping or validation. Specifically, the url parameter or similar is echoed back without using WordPress's built-in escaping functions like esc_url() or esc_html().
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a malicious URL:
https://victim-site.com/?shorturl=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Victim clicks the link (e.g., via phishing email).
- The plugin processes the request and reflects the
<script>tag in the HTML response. - The victim's browser executes the script, allowing the attacker to steal cookies, redirect the user, or perform other malicious actions.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code pattern is described below. A patched version would use proper escaping.
Vulnerable Code (Example):
<?php
// short-url.php (vulnerable)
$short_url = $_GET['url'];
echo "<a href='$short_url'>Click here</a>";
?>
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
<?php
// short-url.php (patched)
$short_url = esc_url($_GET['url']);
echo "<a href='$short_url'>Click here</a>";
?>
The patched version uses esc_url() to sanitize the URL, preventing script injection. Additionally, output should be escaped with esc_html() when displaying user input in HTML context.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with Short URL plugin version <= 1.6.8.
- A web browser or tool like
curl.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify a vulnerable parameter (e.g.,
url,shorturl, or similar). - Craft a malicious URL:
http://victim-site.com/?shorturl=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Send the link to the victim via phishing or social engineering.
- When the victim clicks, the script executes, and the attacker can capture cookies or perform other actions.
Example using curl:
curl "http://victim-site.com/?shorturl=<script>alert('XSS')</script>"
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a generic demonstration.
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests containing
<script>tags or suspicious URL parameters. - Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block reflected XSS patterns.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate impact.
Mitigation:
- Remove or disable the Short URL plugin until a patch is released.
- Apply virtual patching via WAF rules.
- Educate users about phishing links.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests containing
?shorturl=<script>or similar patterns. - Referer headers from known malicious domains.
- HTTP requests containing
- Host IOCs:
- Presence of the Short URL plugin (version <= 1.6.8) in
/wp-content/plugins/short-url/. - Unexpected JavaScript execution in browser console.
- Presence of the Short URL plugin (version <= 1.6.8) in
- File IOCs:
- Modified plugin files with injected code (if exploited for persistence).

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin: Deactivate and remove the Short URL plugin from your WordPress installation until a patch is available.
- Apply virtual patching: Use a WAF to block requests containing
<script>in theshorturlparameter. - Monitor logs: Review web server logs for signs of exploitation.
Long-term Solutions:
- Replace the plugin with an alternative that is actively maintained.
- Implement a Content Security Policy (CSP) to restrict script execution.
- Regularly update all WordPress components.
Patch Status: No official patch is available. Users should consider the plugin abandoned and migrate to a different solution.
