CVE-2024-37352
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-37352 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the management UI of Absolute Secure Access prior to version 13.06. An attacker with system administrator privileges can inject malicious scripts that execute when another administrator accesses the vulnerable page. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 4.5 (Medium), with high impact on integrity but no impact on confidentiality or availability. No public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code is available at this time. The vendor has released a fix in version 13.06.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) and does not involve a WordPress plugin. It is a proprietary enterprise software product.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 4.5 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: High (PR:H) – attacker must be a system administrator
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – victim administrator must access the vulnerable page
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality: None (C:N)
- Integrity: High (I:H)
- Availability: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation requires high privileges and user interaction, limiting the attack surface to internal threats or compromised admin accounts.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the management UI of Absolute Secure Access. An attacker with system administrator privileges can inject malicious JavaScript into a page that is later viewed by another administrator. The injected script executes in the context of the victim's session, allowing the attacker to perform actions such as modifying system configurations, creating backdoor accounts, or exfiltrating session tokens.
The root cause is insufficient sanitization of user-supplied input in the management UI. The attacker can craft a payload that bypasses input validation and is stored in the application's database. When the victim administrator loads the vulnerable page, the payload is rendered without proper encoding, leading to script execution.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (prior to 13.06):
// Example of vulnerable input handling
function saveConfiguration(input) {
// No sanitization
document.getElementById('configDisplay').innerHTML = input;
}
Patched Code (13.06 and later):
// Example of patched input handling
function saveConfiguration(input) {
// Sanitize input using DOMPurify or similar library
var sanitized = DOMPurify.sanitize(input);
document.getElementById('configDisplay').innerHTML = sanitized;
}
The patch introduces proper output encoding and input sanitization to prevent XSS attacks.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Access to Absolute Secure Access management UI with system administrator privileges.
- Knowledge of a vulnerable page (e.g., configuration settings, user management).
Steps:
- Log in as an attacker administrator.
- Navigate to a vulnerable page (e.g., system configuration).
- Inject a malicious payload into an input field, such as:
<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Save the configuration.
- Wait for another administrator to access the same page.
- The payload executes in the victim's browser, allowing the attacker to perform actions on their behalf.
Example Payload:
<script>
fetch('/api/admin/users', {
method: 'POST',
headers: {'Content-Type': 'application/json'},
body: JSON.stringify({username: 'backdoor', password: 'P@ssw0rd', role: 'admin'})
});
</script>
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual JavaScript execution in the management UI.
- Look for unexpected changes to system configurations or user accounts.
- Use web application firewalls (WAF) to detect XSS payloads.
Mitigation:
- Apply the vendor patch (upgrade to version 13.06).
- Implement strict input validation and output encoding.
- Use Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to restrict script execution.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests containing
<script>tags or other XSS payloads in POST/GET parameters. - Logs: Unusual JavaScript errors in browser console logs.
- System: Unexpected changes to configuration files or user accounts.
- File: Presence of malicious scripts in the application's database.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Upgrade Absolute Secure Access to version 13.06 or later.
- Workaround: If patching is not possible, restrict access to the management UI to trusted IP addresses and enforce multi-factor authentication (MFA).
- Long-term: Implement a web application firewall (WAF) with XSS detection rules. Conduct regular security audits and penetration testing.
- Monitoring: Enable logging for all admin actions and review logs for suspicious activity.
