CVE-2024-38518
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-38518 is a privilege escalation vulnerability in BigBlueButton, an open-source virtual classroom platform. An attacker with a valid viewer join link can manipulate the signed URL to add the role=moderator parameter, thereby gaining moderator privileges. This allows unauthorized control over meeting functions such as muting participants, sharing screens, and managing recordings. The vulnerability has been patched in versions 2.6.18, 2.7.8, and 3.0.0-alpha.7. The EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood, but the impact on confidentiality and integrity is moderate.

Supply Chain & Package Security
BigBlueButton is a self-hosted application typically deployed via Debian/Ubuntu packages or Docker. The vulnerability is not in a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but in the core application logic. Administrators should verify the integrity of their BigBlueButton installation and ensure they are running a patched version.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 4.6 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None (requires a valid viewer join link)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (attacker can access moderator-only content)
- Integrity Impact: Low (attacker can perform moderator actions)
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability requires a valid join link, which limits the attack surface to participants who already have access to a meeting. However, once exploited, the attacker can disrupt the meeting and access sensitive information.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
BigBlueButton uses signed join links to authenticate users. The link contains parameters such as meetingID, password, and role. The signature is generated using a shared secret to prevent tampering. However, the vulnerability lies in the signature validation logic: the server does not properly verify that the role parameter is part of the signed payload. An attacker can append &role=moderator to a valid viewer link, and the server will accept it because the signature is still valid for the original parameters.
The attack flow:
- Attacker obtains a valid viewer join link (e.g.,
https://bbb.example.com/bigbluebutton/api/join?meetingID=123&password=abc&role=viewer&checksum=xyz). - Attacker appends
&role=moderatorto the URL. - The server validates the checksum against the original parameters (excluding the appended
role), so the signature remains valid. - The server then uses the last
roleparameter value (moderator) to assign privileges.
This is a classic parameter injection vulnerability due to improper input validation and signature scope.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable: Only checks signature for original parameters
String queryString = request.getQueryString();
String checksum = extractChecksum(queryString);
String signedParams = queryString.replace("&checksum=" + checksum, "");
if (verifyChecksum(signedParams, checksum)) {
// Accept all parameters, including injected ones
String role = request.getParameter("role");
// Assign role...
}
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched: Reconstructs the signed payload and validates all parameters
String queryString = request.getQueryString();
String checksum = extractChecksum(queryString);
String signedParams = queryString.replace("&checksum=" + checksum, "");
if (verifyChecksum(signedParams, checksum)) {
// Only use parameters that were part of the signed payload
Map<String, String> params = parseSignedParams(signedParams);
String role = params.get("role"); // Only from signed params
// Assign role...
}
The patch ensures that only parameters present in the signed payload are used for authorization.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- A BigBlueButton server running a vulnerable version (< 2.6.18, < 2.7.8, < 3.0.0-alpha.7).
- A valid viewer join link for an active meeting.
Exploitation Steps:
- Obtain a viewer join link (e.g., from a meeting invitation or by sniffing traffic).
- Append
&role=moderatorto the URL. - Access the modified URL in a browser.
- You will join the meeting as a moderator.
Example:
# Original viewer link
https://bbb.example.com/bigbluebutton/api/join?meetingID=123&password=abc&role=viewer&checksum=xyz
# Modified link
https://bbb.example.com/bigbluebutton/api/join?meetingID=123&password=abc&role=viewer&checksum=xyz&role=moderator
Note: No public exploit code is available. This is a manual manipulation.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for join links with multiple
roleparameters. - Check server logs for unusual moderator assignments from viewer links.
- Use the detection rules below.
Honeypot:
- Deploy a vulnerable BigBlueButton instance in a sandboxed environment.
- Monitor for any attempts to manipulate join links.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests to
/bigbluebutton/api/joincontaining&role=moderatorappended to a valid link. - Logs: Server logs showing a user joining as moderator with a viewer link.
- File: No specific file IOCs.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate:
- Upgrade BigBlueButton to version 2.6.18, 2.7.8, or 3.0.0-alpha.7 (or later).
- If upgrade is not possible, restrict access to join links using network segmentation or VPN.
Long-term:
- Implement strict input validation for all parameters in join links.
- Ensure that signatures cover all parameters used for authorization.
- Regularly audit and update BigBlueButton installations.
Workaround:
- Use a reverse proxy to filter out requests with multiple
roleparameters. - Monitor logs for suspicious join attempts.
