CVE-2024-38706
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-38706 is a Path Traversal vulnerability found in the HT Mega WordPress plugin (slug: ht-mega-for-elementor) developed by DevItems. This plugin is a popular add-on for the Elementor page builder, providing a wide array of widgets and extensions. The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker to traverse directories outside the intended web root, potentially reading sensitive files on the server. The CVSS score is 6.5 (Medium), but the impact is limited to confidentiality. No public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code has been released at this time, and the patch status remains unknown.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed through the official WordPress plugin repository. The supply chain risk is elevated because:
- Widespread Use: HT Mega is installed on hundreds of thousands of WordPress sites.
- Delayed Patching: The vendor has not yet released a patch, leaving all sites running version 2.5.7 or earlier exposed.
- No Workaround: Without a patch, the only mitigation is to disable or remove the plugin.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The vulnerability can be exploited remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component and the affected resource are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited file read capability.
- Integrity (I): None (N) – No file modification possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability is easy to exploit but only allows reading arbitrary files, not code execution or data modification.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a Path Traversal flaw, specifically using the .../...// pattern (CWE-35). This pattern bypasses simple sanitization that removes ../ sequences. The vulnerable endpoint likely processes a file path parameter without proper validation, allowing an attacker to read files outside the WordPress installation directory.
Example vulnerable parameter: ?file=.../...//wp-config.php
The .../...// sequence, when normalized by the operating system, becomes ../../ (since ... is a valid directory name on Unix-like systems, and .../...// resolves to ../../). This allows the attacker to traverse up two directories and then access wp-config.php, which contains database credentials.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only analyze the vulnerable code pattern. The vulnerable function likely looks like this:
Vulnerable Code (PHP):
function read_file($file) {
$file = str_replace('../', '', $file); // Insufficient sanitization
$content = file_get_contents(ABSPATH . $file);
return $content;
}
Patched Code (Expected):
function read_file($file) {
$file = realpath(ABSPATH . $file);
if (strpos($file, ABSPATH) !== 0) {
die('Invalid path');
}
$content = file_get_contents($file);
return $content;
}
The patched version uses realpath() to resolve the canonical path and then checks that it starts with the allowed base directory (ABSPATH).
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Lab Setup:
- Install WordPress 6.x on a local server (e.g., XAMPP, Docker).
- Install HT Mega plugin version 2.5.7.
- Ensure the plugin is activated.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint (likely an AJAX action or a shortcode handler).
- Craft a request with the path traversal payload:
GET /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=ht_mega_read_file&file=.../...//wp-config.php HTTP/1.1 Host: target.com - The server will return the contents of
wp-config.php, revealing database credentials.
Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a theoretical exploitation based on the CVE description.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests containing
.../...//or similar path traversal patterns. - Look for requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith suspiciousfileparameters. - Alert on any attempts to read
wp-config.php,.env, or other sensitive files.
Hunting:
- Search for HTTP requests with
action=ht_mega_read_file(or similar) and afileparameter containing..or.... - Use the YARA and Sigma rules below to scan logs and endpoints.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File Paths:
/wp-config.php,/etc/passwd,/.env - URL Patterns:
.../...//in thefileparameter - HTTP Requests:
GET /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=ht_mega_read_file&file=.../...//wp-config.php - Log Entries:
"action":"ht_mega_read_file"with"file":".../...//"

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is released.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing
.../...//in the query string. - Restrict file permissions on sensitive files (e.g.,
wp-config.phpshould be readable only by the web server user).
Long-term Fix:
- Monitor the vendor's repository for a patched version (>= 2.5.8).
- Apply the patch as soon as it becomes available.
- Consider replacing the plugin with a more secure alternative if the vendor does not respond.
