CVE-2024-52465
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-52465 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the LGPD Framework WordPress plugin, developed by Data443 Risk Mitigation, Inc. This plugin is designed to help websites comply with Brazil's LGPD (Lei Geral de Proteção de Dados) privacy law. The vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary web scripts or HTML into a page, which will execute in the context of the victim's browser if they click a crafted link. The CVSS score is 7.1 (High), and the attack vector is network-based with low complexity. No public proof-of-concept (PoC) or patch is currently available.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin's update channel for a patched version. Since this is a WordPress plugin, the risk extends to any site using the LGPD Framework plugin, potentially impacting thousands of websites.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Base Score: 7.1 (High)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – the victim must click a malicious link.
- Scope: Changed (S:C) – the vulnerability can impact resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L)
- Availability Impact: Low (A:L)
Threat Level: High. Although user interaction is required, the low complexity and network-based attack vector make this a significant threat for WordPress sites using the plugin.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a reflected XSS (CWE-79) in the LGPD Framework plugin. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before including it in the output of a web page. An attacker can craft a URL containing malicious JavaScript code in a parameter. When a victim clicks the link, the server reflects the malicious code back in the HTTP response, which the browser then executes.
The vulnerable parameter is likely a query string parameter used for error messages or status updates. The plugin does not escape or validate this input, allowing arbitrary script injection.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, we can only describe the vulnerable pattern.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
<?php
// Vulnerable: directly echoes user input without sanitization
echo '<div class="error">' . $_GET['error_message'] . '</div>';
?>
Patched Code (Expected):
<?php
// Patched: uses esc_html() to escape output
echo '<div class="error">' . esc_html( $_GET['error_message'] ) . '</div>';
?>
The patched version would use WordPress's built-in escaping functions like esc_html(), esc_attr(), or wp_kses() to neutralize the input.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
- Setup: Install a local WordPress instance with the LGPD Framework plugin version 2.0.2.
- Craft Payload: Create a URL with a malicious script in a vulnerable parameter. Example:
http://target-site.com/?lgpd_action=error&error_message=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Deliver: Send the crafted link to a victim via email, social media, or other channels.
- Execute: When the victim clicks the link, the script executes in their browser.
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual example.
Blue Team (Detection & Defense)
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy WAF rules to block common XSS patterns in query strings.
- Input Validation: Ensure all user inputs are validated and sanitized on the server side.
- Content Security Policy (CSP): Implement a strict CSP header to mitigate the impact of XSS.
- Monitor Logs: Look for suspicious URLs containing
<script>tags or other XSS indicators.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL Patterns: Requests containing
error_message=or similar parameters with<script>tags. - Log Entries: HTTP 200 responses with reflected
<script>tags in the body. - Network Traffic: Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains from the victim's browser.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Disable the LGPD Framework plugin until a patch is available.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block XSS patterns in query strings.
- Long-term: Apply the official patch from Data443 Risk Mitigation, Inc. as soon as it is released.
- Alternative: Consider using a different LGPD compliance plugin that is actively maintained.
