CVE-2024-5544
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-5544 is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Media Library Assistant plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 3.17. The flaw resides in insufficient sanitization of the order parameter, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts. Successful exploitation requires user interaction (e.g., clicking a crafted link), leading to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement within the WordPress admin context. As a WordPress plugin vulnerability, this directly impacts the WordPress ecosystem and its users.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users should verify plugin integrity via checksums provided by WordPress.org and monitor for updates. No known supply chain compromise has been reported.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 6.1 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: Required
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. Exploitation is straightforward but requires user interaction. The impact is limited to information disclosure and partial integrity compromise.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the order parameter used by the Media Library Assistant plugin to sort media items. The plugin fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before reflecting it in the response. An attacker can craft a URL containing malicious JavaScript in the order parameter. When a logged-in administrator clicks the link, the script executes in the context of the WordPress admin panel, potentially allowing the attacker to perform actions on behalf of the victim.
Root Cause: Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the order parameter handling.
Attack Vector: Reflected XSS via crafted URL.
Prerequisites: User must be logged into WordPress and click the malicious link.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 3.17):
// In a file like mla-admin.php
$order = $_GET['order'];
echo "<input type='hidden' name='order' value='" . $order . "'>";
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
$order = sanitize_text_field($_GET['order']);
echo "<input type='hidden' name='order' value='" . esc_attr($order) . "'>";
The vulnerable code directly echoes the order parameter without sanitization or escaping. The patched code uses sanitize_text_field() and esc_attr() to neutralize malicious input.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Proof of Concept (PoC):
- Craft a malicious URL:
https://target.com/wp-admin/upload.php?page=mla-main&order=<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Send the link to a logged-in administrator via email or social engineering.
- When clicked, the script executes in the admin context.
Advanced Payload:
https://target.com/wp-admin/upload.php?page=mla-main&order=<img src=x onerror=alert(document.cookie)>
Blue Team
Lab Setup:
- Install WordPress with the Media Library Assistant plugin (version 3.17).
- Create a test user with administrator privileges.
- Use a browser with developer tools to inspect network requests.
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual
orderparameter values in HTTP requests. - Look for patterns like
<script>,<img onerror, or base64-encoded payloads.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL Pattern:
/wp-admin/upload.php?page=mla-main&order=*containing script tags or event handlers. - HTTP Request: GET request to
/wp-admin/upload.phpwith suspiciousorderparameter. - Log Entry: Access logs showing
orderparameter with HTML/JavaScript content. - Cookie Theft: Unusual cookie values or session tokens in logs.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until a patch is available.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block malicious
orderparameter values. - Educate users about phishing attacks and not clicking suspicious links.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply the vendor patch when released (currently UNKNOWN).
- Upgrade to a patched version once available.
- Conduct a security audit of all WordPress plugins.
Workaround:
- Add the following to
.htaccess(Apache) or equivalent:RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} order=.*<script [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} order=.*<img [NC,OR] RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} order=.*<svg [NC] RewriteRule ^ - [F,L]
