CVE-2024-55657
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-55657 is a critical arbitrary file read vulnerability in Siyuan, a personal knowledge management system. The vulnerability resides in the /api/template/render endpoint, which fails to properly validate the path parameter. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to read arbitrary files from the host system, including sensitive configuration files, credentials, and other data. The vulnerability affects all versions prior to 3.1.16. The CVSS score is 0.0 due to incomplete NVD data, but based on the technical details, the actual severity is high (CVSS 7.5). No public proof-of-concept or exploit code is currently available, but the attack vector is straightforward.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby) but is a direct issue in the Siyuan application itself. The risk is limited to self-hosted instances of Siyuan.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The endpoint is accessible over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication is needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action is required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component and the affected resource are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Arbitrary file read can expose sensitive data.
- Integrity (I): None (N) – No data modification is possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
CVSS Score: 7.5 (High)
Threat Level: High. The vulnerability is easy to exploit and can lead to significant data exposure.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the /api/template/render endpoint. This endpoint is designed to render templates by reading a template file from the filesystem. The path parameter specifies the location of the template file. Due to insufficient validation, an attacker can supply a path that traverses outside the intended template directory, such as ../../etc/passwd. The application then reads and returns the contents of that file.
The core issue is a classic path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22). The application does not sanitize or canonicalize the user-supplied path before using it in file read operations. This allows an attacker to read any file on the system that the Siyuan process has access to.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// Vulnerable endpoint handler
app.post('/api/template/render', (req, res) => {
const templatePath = req.body.path;
// No validation - directly reads the file
const content = fs.readFileSync(templatePath, 'utf8');
res.send(content);
});
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// Patched endpoint handler
const path = require('path');
const ALLOWED_DIR = '/path/to/templates';
app.post('/api/template/render', (req, res) => {
const userPath = req.body.path;
// Resolve and validate the path
const resolvedPath = path.resolve(ALLOWED_DIR, userPath);
if (!resolvedPath.startsWith(ALLOWED_DIR)) {
return res.status(403).send('Forbidden');
}
const content = fs.readFileSync(resolvedPath, 'utf8');
res.send(content);
});
The patch adds a check to ensure that the resolved path stays within the allowed template directory.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Lab Setup:
- Deploy a vulnerable Siyuan instance (version < 3.1.16) in a Docker container.
- Ensure the instance is accessible on the network.
Exploitation Steps:
- Identify the target Siyuan instance.
- Send a POST request to the
/api/template/renderendpoint with a maliciouspathparameter. - Example request using
curl:curl -X POST http://target:port/api/template/render \ -H "Content-Type: application/json" \ -d '{"path": "../../etc/passwd"}' - The response will contain the contents of the
/etc/passwdfile. - To read other files, adjust the path accordingly (e.g.,
../../etc/shadow,../../proc/1/environ).
Expected Output:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
daemon:x:1:1:daemon:/usr/sbin:/usr/sbin/nologin
...
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for POST requests to
/api/template/renderwith suspiciouspathparameters containing../or absolute paths. - Look for unusual file read patterns, such as reading
/etc/passwdor other system files.
Hunting:
- Search logs for requests to
/api/template/renderwhere thepathparameter contains..or starts with/. - Correlate with file access logs to identify unauthorized reads.
Mitigation:
- Immediately upgrade to version 3.1.16 or later.
- If immediate patching is not possible, implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block path traversal patterns in the
pathparameter. - Restrict the Siyuan process's file system permissions to limit the impact of a successful exploit.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network:
- POST requests to
/api/template/renderwithpathparameters containing../or absolute paths. - Unusual outbound data transfers from the Siyuan server.
- POST requests to
- File System:
- Unexpected reads of sensitive files (e.g.,
/etc/passwd,/etc/shadow, application configuration files).
- Unexpected reads of sensitive files (e.g.,
- Logs:
- Siyuan access logs showing requests to
/api/template/renderwith suspicious paths. - System logs showing file access errors or unusual file reads.
- Siyuan access logs showing requests to

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Upgrade Siyuan to version 3.1.16 or later.
- Workaround: If patching is not possible, implement a WAF rule to block requests containing
../in thepathparameter. - Configuration: Restrict the Siyuan process's file system permissions to read-only access to only the necessary directories.
- Monitoring: Enable detailed logging for the
/api/template/renderendpoint and monitor for suspicious activity. - Network Segmentation: Place the Siyuan instance behind a firewall and restrict access to trusted IPs only.
