CVE-2024-5571
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-5571 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the EmbedPress WordPress plugin, affecting versions up to and including 4.0.1. The flaw resides in the plugin's PDF widget, specifically within the url attribute. Insufficient input sanitization and output escaping allow authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user accesses a page containing the maliciously crafted widget, the injected script executes in the context of the victim's browser. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement. The vulnerability is part of the WordPress ecosystem and does not affect Apache or Nginx directly.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the EmbedPress WordPress plugin, which is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users should verify the integrity of their plugin files and ensure they are sourced from trusted channels. No known supply chain compromise has been reported, but the lack of a patch increases risk for sites using this plugin.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: Required (Victim must visit the page)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
The threat level is elevated due to the low barrier for exploitation (authenticated contributor) and the potential for widespread impact across WordPress sites using the plugin.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic Stored XSS in the WordPress ecosystem. The EmbedPress plugin provides a Gutenberg/Elementor widget for embedding PDFs. The url attribute is used to specify the PDF source. Due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, an attacker can inject malicious JavaScript code into the url attribute.
Attack Flow:
- An authenticated user with contributor-level access creates or edits a post/page.
- The attacker inserts the EmbedPress PDF widget and sets the
urlattribute to a malicious payload, e.g.,javascript:alert('XSS')or a data URI containing JavaScript. - The plugin stores the payload in the database without proper sanitization.
- When any user (including administrators) views the page, the payload is rendered and executed in the browser.
Root Cause: The plugin fails to validate and escape the url attribute before outputting it in the HTML. This is a common WordPress plugin vulnerability (CWE-79).
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 4.0.1):
// In the widget render function
$url = $settings['url'];
echo '<a href="' . $url . '">View PDF</a>';
The $url is directly echoed without escaping.
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
// In the widget render function
$url = esc_url($settings['url']);
echo '<a href="' . $url . '">View PDF</a>';
The esc_url() function sanitizes the URL, preventing JavaScript injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress site with EmbedPress plugin <= 4.0.1
- Contributor-level account or higher
Exploit Steps:
- Log in as a contributor.
- Create a new post or edit an existing one.
- Add the EmbedPress PDF widget.
- In the
urlfield, enter a malicious payload such as:
or a data URI:javascript:alert(document.cookie)data:text/html,<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Publish or save the post.
- When an administrator or other user views the post, the script executes.
Proof of Concept (PoC) Code:
<!-- Example payload for the url attribute -->
javascript:alert('XSS')
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for posts/pages containing suspicious
urlattributes in the EmbedPress widget. - Use Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules to block known XSS payloads in URL parameters.
Hardening:
- Disable the EmbedPress plugin until a patch is available.
- Restrict contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/embedpress/(presence of vulnerable version) - Database: Posts/pages with
urlattribute containingjavascript:ordata:URIs - Logs: HTTP requests to pages containing the malicious widget
- Network: Outbound connections from injected scripts (e.g., to attacker-controlled servers)

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin if not critical to operations.
- Restrict contributor roles to only trusted users.
- Implement a WAF to block XSS payloads in post content.
Long-term Fix:
- Apply the official patch once released by the vendor.
- Upgrade to a patched version (currently unavailable).
- Consider replacing the plugin with an alternative that is actively maintained.
