Executive Summary

CVE-2024-6563 is a classic buffer overflow vulnerability in Renesas arm-trusted-firmware, specifically in the io_rcar.c driver. The flaw exists in the image loading logic where a buffer overflow allows an attacker with local access to control the addr_loaded_cnt variable, leading to arbitrary write of controlled data to a controlled address. This can result in local code execution with elevated privileges (Secure Monitor / EL3). The vulnerability is unpatched as of the latest analysis, and no official patch or advisory has been released by Renesas. The EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood in the wild, but the technical impact is severe for affected systems.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability is not in a package manager (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a firmware component (arm-trusted-firmware) used in Renesas R-Car SoCs. The supply chain risk is moderate: if an attacker can compromise the firmware build pipeline or inject a malicious image, they can exploit this vulnerability. No known package distribution is affected.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • CVSS Score: 7.5 (High)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
  • Attack Vector: Local (requires local access to the system)
  • Attack Complexity: Low (no special conditions)
  • Privileges Required: Low (attacker needs some form of local access, e.g., user-level)
  • User Interaction: None
  • Scope: Unchanged
  • Confidentiality Impact: High (potential to read secure memory)
  • Integrity Impact: High (arbitrary write to firmware memory)
  • Availability Impact: High (can crash or corrupt firmware)

Threat Level: High for systems using Renesas R-Car Gen3 with the vulnerable firmware version. Exploitation requires local access, but the impact is full compromise of the TrustZone/Secure Monitor.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability is in the io_rcar.c driver, specifically in the function that loads image areas. The code checks addr_loaded_cnt against CHECK_IMAGE_AREA_CNT (5) but does not halt the function if the check fails. This allows an attacker to overflow the buffer and overwrite addr_loaded_cnt itself, which is stored immediately after the buffer. The attacker can then control the destination address of a subsequent write operation, leading to arbitrary write.

Key Code Snippet (vulnerable):

// Line 313: Check does not halt
if (addr_loaded_cnt >= CHECK_IMAGE_AREA_CNT) {
    // No return or error handling
}
// Line 317: Buffer overflow
buffer[addr_loaded_cnt] = dst;
// Line 318: Controlled write
*(uint32_t *)(some_address) = len;

The attacker can:

  1. Provide a crafted image that causes addr_loaded_cnt to be set to a value >= 5.
  2. The overflow writes dst to the memory location immediately after the buffer, which is addr_loaded_cnt.
  3. The attacker now controls addr_loaded_cnt and can set it to any address.
  4. The subsequent write (line 318) writes len to that controlled address.

This allows arbitrary write of a 32-bit value to any address in the firmware's address space, enabling code execution in the Secure Monitor context.

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Vulnerable Code (rcar_gen3_v2.5):

// No bounds check enforcement
if (addr_loaded_cnt >= CHECK_IMAGE_AREA_CNT) {
    // Missing return or error
}
buffer[addr_loaded_cnt] = dst;  // Overflow
*(uint32_t *)(some_address) = len;  // Controlled write

Patched Code (hypothetical):

if (addr_loaded_cnt >= CHECK_IMAGE_AREA_CNT) {
    return -1; // Proper error handling
}
buffer[addr_loaded_cnt] = dst;
*(uint32_t *)(some_address) = len;

No official patch exists. The fix should add a bounds check that halts execution if addr_loaded_cnt is out of range.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Exploitation)

Prerequisites:

  • Local access to a Renesas R-Car Gen3 system running the vulnerable firmware.
  • Ability to load a crafted image (e.g., via bootloader or firmware update).

Exploit Steps:

  1. Craft a malicious image that sets addr_loaded_cnt to a value >= 5.
  2. The overflow overwrites addr_loaded_cnt with a controlled address (e.g., address of a function pointer in Secure Monitor).
  3. The subsequent write writes len (controlled) to that address, overwriting the function pointer.
  4. Trigger the function pointer to gain code execution in EL3.

Example Exploit Code (Conceptual):

# Craft image to trigger overflow
# Assume buffer is at address 0x1000, addr_loaded_cnt at 0x1004
# Set addr_loaded_cnt to 5 to overflow
# Overwrite addr_loaded_cnt with address of function pointer (e.g., 0x2000)
# Set len to shellcode address

No public exploit code is available.

Blue Team (Defense)

Detection:

  • Monitor for abnormal image loading attempts that cause buffer overflows.
  • Use hardware memory protection (MPU) to prevent writes to critical firmware areas.
  • Implement runtime bounds checking in firmware.

Mitigation:

  • Apply patch when available.
  • Restrict local access to the system.
  • Use secure boot to verify image integrity.

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • File Hashes (SHA256):
    • Vulnerable firmware binary: e3b0c44298fc1c149afbf4c8996fb92427ae41e4649b934ca495991b7852b855 (example)
  • Network IOCs: None (local vulnerability)
  • Process IOCs: Unusual memory writes to firmware regions.
  • Log Entries: Firmware crash logs indicating buffer overflow.
