CVE-2024-9436
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-9436 is a Reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the PublishPress Revisions: Duplicate Posts, Submit, Approve and Schedule Content Changes plugin for WordPress, affecting all versions up to and including 3.5.14. The flaw arises from the insecure use of add_query_arg without proper output escaping on URL parameters. An unauthenticated attacker can inject arbitrary web scripts that execute in the context of a victim’s browser if the victim clicks a crafted link. With a CVSS score of 6.1 (Medium), this vulnerability requires user interaction but no authentication, making it a viable phishing or social engineering vector. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, and the patch status remains unknown.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability affects a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users are advised to monitor the plugin’s update channel and apply any security patches as soon as they become available. Since the plugin is part of the WordPress ecosystem, supply chain risks include compromised updates or malicious forks, though no such indicators have been reported.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack is carried out over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must click a malicious link.
- Scope (S): Changed (C) – The injected script can affect resources beyond the vulnerable component.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Limited data exposure possible.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – Script injection can modify content.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No direct impact on availability.
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability is easy to exploit but requires user interaction. It is suitable for targeted phishing campaigns.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the PublishPress Revisions plugin’s handling of URL parameters. The plugin uses the WordPress function add_query_arg to construct URLs without properly escaping the output. When a user clicks a crafted link containing malicious JavaScript in a parameter, the script is reflected back in the response and executed in the user’s browser.
Root Cause: The add_query_arg function builds a URL by appending query parameters. If the parameter values are not sanitized or escaped before being output in the HTML, an attacker can inject arbitrary JavaScript. For example, a URL like:
http://example.com/wp-admin/admin.php?page=revision&_wpnonce=<script>alert('XSS')</script>
could cause the script to execute if the plugin echoes the _wpnonce parameter without escaping.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker crafts a malicious URL with a JavaScript payload in a vulnerable parameter.
- Attacker sends the link to a victim via email, social media, or other channels.
- Victim clicks the link while authenticated to the WordPress site.
- The plugin processes the request and reflects the payload in the response.
- The victim’s browser executes the injected script, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or performing actions on behalf of the victim.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (example from plugin):
$url = add_query_arg( array( 'page' => 'revision', '_wpnonce' => $_GET['_wpnonce'] ), admin_url( 'admin.php' ) );
echo '<a href="' . $url . '">Click here</a>';
In this snippet, the $_GET['_wpnonce'] value is directly passed to add_query_arg and then echoed without escaping, allowing XSS.
Patched Code (expected fix):
$url = add_query_arg( array( 'page' => 'revision', '_wpnonce' => esc_attr( $_GET['_wpnonce'] ) ), admin_url( 'admin.php' ) );
echo '<a href="' . esc_url( $url ) . '">Click here</a>';
The fix uses esc_attr() to escape the parameter value and esc_url() to escape the entire URL before output.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
- Setup: Install WordPress with PublishPress Revisions plugin version 3.5.14 on a local or cloud-based lab.
- Craft Payload: Identify a vulnerable parameter (e.g.,
_wpnonce,page, oraction) and inject a JavaScript payload:http://target/wp-admin/admin.php?page=revision&_wpnonce=<script>alert(document.cookie)</script> - Deliver: Use a URL shortener or embed the link in a phishing email.
- Execute: When the victim clicks the link, the script executes in their browser.
Note: No public exploit code is available; this is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team (Defensive)
- Monitor Logs: Check web server access logs for suspicious query strings containing
<script>,alert(, oronerror=patterns. - WAF Rules: Deploy a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests with XSS patterns in query parameters.
- User Training: Educate users not to click suspicious links, especially those containing unusual characters.
- Update Plugin: Apply the patch as soon as it becomes available.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- URL Patterns: Requests containing
?page=revision&_wpnonce=followed by<script>or other JavaScript code. - HTTP Referer: Suspicious referers from phishing domains.
- User-Agent: Unusual user-agent strings may indicate automated scanning.
- Log Entries: Web server logs showing 200 responses to URLs with XSS payloads.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Disable the PublishPress Revisions plugin until a patch is applied.
- Short-term: Implement a WAF rule to block XSS patterns in query parameters.
- Long-term: Apply the vendor patch when released. If no patch is available, consider replacing the plugin with an alternative.
- User Awareness: Conduct phishing simulations to train users against clicking suspicious links.
- Monitoring: Enable detailed logging for WordPress admin pages and review logs for anomalies.
