CVE-2024-9543
Executive Summary
CVE-2024-9543 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the PowerPress Podcasting plugin by Blubrry for WordPress. The flaw resides in the plugin's skipto shortcode, which fails to properly sanitize user-supplied attributes and escape output. This allows authenticated attackers with at least Contributor-level access to inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user (including administrators) visits a page containing the malicious shortcode, the injected script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, or further compromise.
This vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 11.9.18. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public exploit code is available. The EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood at this time, but the risk remains significant for sites with untrusted contributors.
This record — and 170,000+ others — are available via the ValtersIT API. One endpoint replaces five: NVD + GitHub CVE + CISA KEV + EPSS + Nuclei + Exploit-DB, unified.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This is a WordPress plugin vulnerability. The plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users should monitor the plugin's page for updates and consider disabling the plugin if untrusted users have Contributor access or higher.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:L
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: Required (victim must visit the page)
- Scope: Changed (impact may extend beyond the vulnerable component)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: Low
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for authenticated access and user interaction reduces the immediate threat, but the potential for stored XSS in a widely-used plugin makes it a significant concern for WordPress sites with multiple authors.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the skipto shortcode provided by the PowerPress plugin. Shortcodes in WordPress are parsed by the plugin's code, which extracts attributes and generates HTML output. In this case, the plugin fails to properly sanitize the title or other user-supplied attributes before outputting them into the page's HTML.
The vulnerable code likely looks similar to:
function powerpress_skipto_shortcode( $atts ) {
$atts = shortcode_atts( array(
'title' => '',
'time' => '',
), $atts );
// No sanitization on $atts['title']
return '<a href="#skipto-' . esc_attr($atts['time']) . '" class="skipto-link">' . $atts['title'] . '</a>';
}
The title attribute is directly concatenated into the output without escaping, allowing an attacker to inject JavaScript like:
[skipto title="<script>alert('XSS')</script>" time="10"]
When the shortcode is processed, the script tag is rendered in the page, and any user viewing that page will execute the script.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 11.9.18):
// No output escaping on $atts['title']
return '<a href="#skipto-' . esc_attr($atts['time']) . '" class="skipto-link">' . $atts['title'] . '</a>';
Patched Code (hypothetical fix):
// Properly escape the title attribute
return '<a href="#skipto-' . esc_attr($atts['time']) . '" class="skipto-link">' . esc_html( $atts['title'] ) . '</a>';
The fix uses esc_html() to encode HTML special characters, preventing script injection.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Since no public exploit code is available, a manual exploitation approach is described.
Prerequisites:
- WordPress site with PowerPress plugin <= 11.9.18
- An account with Contributor-level access or higher
Steps:
- Log in as a Contributor.
- Create a new post or page.
- Insert the following shortcode into the content:
[skipto title="<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>" time="10"] - Publish or save the post.
- When an administrator or any user visits the post, the JavaScript executes.
Advanced Payload:
[skipto title="<img src=x onerror=alert('XSS')>" time="10"]
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for posts/pages containing the
[skiptoshortcode with suspicious attributes. - Use the YARA and Sigma rules provided in the Detection Engineering section.
Hardening:
- Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Use a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block common XSS patterns in shortcode attributes.
- Disable the PowerPress plugin if not essential, or apply a virtual patch via WAF.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/powerpress/powerpress.php(or related shortcode handler) - Shortcode pattern:
[skipto title="<script>...</script>" ...] - HTTP Request: POST to
/wp-admin/post.phpwithpost_contentcontaining[skipto title= - Log entries: WordPress audit logs showing creation/editing of posts by Contributor-level users with shortcode usage.

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the PowerPress plugin if it is not critical to operations.
- Restrict Contributor-level access to only fully trusted users.
- Apply a virtual patch using a WAF to block shortcode attributes containing
<scriptor event handlers.
Long-term Fix:
- Monitor the plugin's official page for a patched version (expected to be 11.9.19 or higher).
- Once available, update to the patched version immediately.
- Consider using a security plugin like Wordfence to add an extra layer of XSS protection.
