CVE-2025-12023
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-12023 is a missing authorization vulnerability in the ELEX WordPress HelpDesk & Customer Ticketing System plugin, affecting all versions up to and including 3.3.1. The flaw resides in the eh_crm_restore_data() function, which lacks a proper capability check, allowing authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher to restore deleted tickets. This unauthorized data modification can lead to data integrity issues, potential information disclosure, and disruption of the ticketing workflow. The vulnerability is classified as a WordPress ecosystem issue, specifically within the plugin's REST-like AJAX handler.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 4.3 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – Subscriber-level access
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: None (C:N)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – Unauthorized restoration of tickets
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. While the impact is limited to integrity, the low barrier to entry (authenticated subscriber) and the potential for data manipulation in a helpdesk environment make this a significant concern for organizations relying on this plugin for customer support.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic case of missing authorization (CWE-862). The ELEX HelpDesk plugin registers an AJAX action handler for eh_crm_restore_data(). This function is intended to allow administrators or support agents to restore previously deleted tickets. However, the function does not perform a current_user_can() check or any other capability verification before executing the restore operation.
Technical Flow:
- An authenticated user (Subscriber or above) sends a POST request to the WordPress AJAX endpoint (
admin-ajax.php) with the actioneh_crm_restore_dataand the ticket ID. - The plugin's handler
eh_crm_restore_data()is invoked. - The function directly updates the database, changing the ticket's status from 'trash' to 'publish' or similar, without verifying if the user has the
manage_optionsoredit_ticketcapability. - The ticket is restored, and the attacker can now view or interact with previously deleted tickets, potentially gaining access to sensitive customer information.
The vulnerability is particularly dangerous in multi-tenant or shared hosting environments where subscribers may have access to tickets from other users or customers.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 3.3.1):
function eh_crm_restore_data() {
global $wpdb;
$ticket_id = intval($_POST['ticket_id']);
$wpdb->update(
$wpdb->prefix . 'eh_crm_tickets',
array('status' => 'publish'),
array('id' => $ticket_id)
);
wp_die();
}
add_action('wp_ajax_eh_crm_restore_data', 'eh_crm_restore_data');
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function eh_crm_restore_data() {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
global $wpdb;
$ticket_id = intval($_POST['ticket_id']);
$wpdb->update(
$wpdb->prefix . 'eh_crm_tickets',
array('status' => 'publish'),
array('id' => $ticket_id)
);
wp_die();
}
add_action('wp_ajax_eh_crm_restore_data', 'eh_crm_restore_data');
The patched version adds a capability check (current_user_can('manage_options')) to ensure only administrators can restore tickets.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team
Prerequisites:
- WordPress installation with ELEX HelpDesk plugin <= 3.3.1
- Valid user account with Subscriber role or higher
- Knowledge of a deleted ticket ID (can be enumerated via other endpoints)
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in as a subscriber.
- Obtain a nonce for the AJAX action (if required, though the vulnerable function may not enforce nonce checks).
- Send a POST request to
wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwith the following parameters:action:eh_crm_restore_dataticket_id: [ID of a deleted ticket]
Example cURL command:
curl -X POST https://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php \
-c cookies.txt \
-d "action=eh_crm_restore_data&ticket_id=123"
- The ticket with ID 123 will be restored, and the attacker can now view it via the frontend or other API endpoints.
Blue Team
Detection:
- Monitor AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith theactionparameter set toeh_crm_restore_datafrom non-admin users. - Alert on any restoration of tickets by users without the
manage_optionscapability. - Review logs for unusual patterns of ticket restoration, especially from subscriber accounts.
Hunting:
- Query the database for tickets that have been restored from 'trash' status by non-admin users.
- Check the
wp_ajaxhooks for any unauthorized calls toeh_crm_restore_data.
Mitigation:
- Immediately update the plugin if a patched version becomes available.
- As a temporary workaround, add a capability check via a custom plugin or theme functions.php:
add_action('wp_ajax_eh_crm_restore_data', function() {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
}, 1);
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=eh_crm_restore_datafrom IPs not associated with admin users. - Logs: WordPress debug log entries showing
eh_crm_restore_datacalls from subscriber roles. - Database: Tickets with
status = 'publish'that were previously instatus = 'trash', restored outside of normal admin workflow. - File: Unusual modifications to the plugin's main file (
elex-helpdesk/elex-helpdesk.php) or AJAX handler.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Disable the ELEX HelpDesk plugin until a patch is applied.
- Patch: Apply the vendor's patch when released. If unavailable, implement the workaround provided in the Blue Team section.
- Access Control: Review and restrict user roles. Ensure only trusted users have Subscriber or higher access.
- Monitoring: Enable detailed logging for AJAX requests and monitor for suspicious
eh_crm_restore_datacalls. - Web Application Firewall (WAF): Create a rule to block POST requests to
admin-ajax.phpcontainingaction=eh_crm_restore_datafrom non-admin IPs. - Regular Audits: Periodically audit user capabilities and plugin permissions.
