CVE-2025-12783
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-12783 is a medium-severity vulnerability affecting the Premmerce Brands for WooCommerce WordPress plugin, versions up to and including 1.2.13. The flaw resides in the saveBrandsSettings function, which lacks a proper capability check. This allows authenticated attackers with Subscriber-level access or higher to modify brand permalink settings without authorization. While the CVSS score is 4.3 (Medium), the impact is limited to data integrity, as an attacker can alter permalink structures, potentially causing SEO damage or broken links. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, and the vendor has not released a patch.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is distributed via the WordPress Plugin Directory and can be installed directly from the WordPress admin dashboard. Since no patch is available, users must rely on manual mitigation or removal of the plugin.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
- Base Score: 4.3 (Medium)
- Attack Vector: Network (AV:N)
- Attack Complexity: Low (AC:L)
- Privileges Required: Low (PR:L) – Subscriber-level access
- User Interaction: None (UI:N)
- Scope: Unchanged (S:U)
- Confidentiality Impact: None (C:N)
- Integrity Impact: Low (I:L) – Permalink settings can be modified
- Availability Impact: None (A:N)
Threat Level: Medium. The vulnerability requires authentication, but the low privilege requirement (Subscriber) makes it accessible to many users. The impact is limited to integrity, but SEO and site structure could be affected.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability exists in the saveBrandsSettings function within the Premmerce Brands for WooCommerce plugin. This function is responsible for saving brand permalink settings, such as the URL slug for brand pages. The function is hooked to an AJAX action, making it accessible via HTTP POST requests.
Root Cause: The function does not perform a current_user_can() check to verify that the user has the appropriate capability (e.g., manage_options or edit_theme_options). As a result, any authenticated user, including Subscribers, can call this function and modify the permalink settings.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker authenticates as a Subscriber (or higher) on the WordPress site.
- The attacker sends a crafted POST request to the AJAX endpoint
wp_ajax_save_brands_settingswith the desired permalink structure. - The plugin saves the new settings without verifying the user's permissions.
- The brand permalink structure is changed, potentially breaking existing links or causing SEO issues.
Impact: While the attacker cannot directly access sensitive data, they can disrupt the site's URL structure, leading to broken links, loss of search engine rankings, and potential confusion for users.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (version 1.2.13):
public function saveBrandsSettings() {
if (isset($_POST['permalink'])) {
update_option('premmerce_brands_permalink', sanitize_text_field($_POST['permalink']));
}
wp_die();
}
Patched Code (hypothetical):
public function saveBrandsSettings() {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized');
}
if (isset($_POST['permalink'])) {
update_option('premmerce_brands_permalink', sanitize_text_field($_POST['permalink']));
}
wp_die();
}
The patched version adds a capability check (current_user_can('manage_options')) to ensure only administrators can modify permalink settings.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with the Premmerce Brands for WooCommerce plugin (version <= 1.2.13) installed and activated.
- Valid credentials for a Subscriber-level account.
Exploitation Steps:
- Log in to WordPress as a Subscriber.
- Obtain a nonce if required (the plugin may or may not use nonces; if it does, extract it from the page source).
- Send a POST request to the AJAX endpoint:
curl -X POST \
'http://target-site/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php' \
-H 'Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded' \
-d 'action=save_brands_settings&permalink=/custom-brand-slug/'
- Verify the change by visiting a brand page or checking the plugin settings.
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team (Detection & Defense)
Detection:
- Monitor AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith theaction=save_brands_settingsparameter from non-admin users. - Look for changes to the
premmerce_brands_permalinkoption in the database.
Defense:
- Immediately disable or remove the plugin if no patch is available.
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests to
save_brands_settingsfrom users with low privileges. - Restrict Subscriber accounts to only essential capabilities.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/premmerce-brands-for-woocommerce/(presence of the plugin) - Database Option:
premmerce_brands_permalink(unexpected value) - Log Entry: AJAX request to
admin-ajax.phpwithaction=save_brands_settingsfrom a user with role 'subscriber' - URL Pattern:
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php?action=save_brands_settings

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin: Deactivate and delete the Premmerce Brands for WooCommerce plugin until a patch is released.
- Audit user accounts: Review all Subscriber-level accounts for suspicious activity.
- Restore permalink settings: If the permalink was changed, revert it via the WordPress admin (Settings > Permalinks) or directly in the database.
Long-term Mitigation:
- Monitor the plugin's official page for updates. If no patch is released, consider switching to an alternative brand management plugin.
- Implement a WordPress security plugin that adds capability checks to AJAX endpoints.
- Enforce the principle of least privilege for all user roles.
Workaround:
- Add a custom code snippet to your theme's
functions.phpto block the vulnerable function:
add_action('init', function() {
if (current_user_can('subscriber')) {
remove_action('wp_ajax_save_brands_settings', array('PremmerceBrands', 'saveBrandsSettings'));
}
});
