CVE-2025-1453
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-1453 is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability found in the Category Posts Widget WordPress plugin, affecting versions before 4.9.20. This flaw allows high-privilege users (e.g., administrators) to inject malicious scripts into plugin settings, which are then stored and executed when other users view the affected pages. Even in multisite configurations where the unfiltered_html capability is disallowed, the vulnerability persists due to insufficient sanitization and escaping of settings. Successful exploitation could lead to session hijacking, defacement, or redirection to malicious sites.

Supply Chain & Package Security
This vulnerability resides in a WordPress plugin distributed via the official WordPress plugin repository. Users who install the plugin from the repository are affected if they are running a version prior to 4.9.20. The plugin is not available via NPM, PyPI, Go, or Ruby ecosystems.
CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 0.0 (NVD base score not assigned; calculated as 4.8 Medium based on vector)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:H/UI:R/S:C/C:L/I:L/A:N
- Attack Vector: Network
- Attack Complexity: Low
- Privileges Required: High (admin)
- User Interaction: Required (victim must view the page)
- Scope: Changed
- Confidentiality Impact: Low
- Integrity Impact: Low
- Availability Impact: None
- Threat Level: Medium – Exploitation requires admin privileges but can affect all users viewing the widget.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability stems from the plugin’s failure to properly sanitize and escape user-supplied input in its settings fields. When an administrator configures the widget (e.g., setting a custom title or CSS class), the input is stored in the WordPress database without adequate filtering. When the widget is rendered on the frontend, the unsanitized data is output directly into the HTML, allowing arbitrary JavaScript execution.
In a multisite environment, even if the unfiltered_html capability is disabled for administrators, the plugin’s internal handling bypasses this restriction, making the attack feasible. The injected script can perform actions such as stealing cookies, redirecting users, or modifying page content.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Vulnerable Code (pre-4.9.20):
// In the widget settings form
echo '<input type="text" name="' . $this->get_field_name('title') . '" value="' . $instance['title'] . '" />';
Here, $instance['title'] is output directly without escaping.
Patched Code (4.9.20):
// In the widget settings form
echo '<input type="text" name="' . $this->get_field_name('title') . '" value="' . esc_attr($instance['title']) . '" />';
The esc_attr() function is now used to escape the output, preventing XSS.
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Attack Simulation)
- Prerequisites: Admin access to a WordPress site running Category Posts Widget < 4.9.20.
- Steps:
- Navigate to Appearance > Widgets.
- Add or edit a Category Posts Widget.
- In a text field (e.g., Title), inject a payload such as:
<script>alert('XSS')</script> - Save the widget.
- Any user visiting a page displaying the widget will trigger the script.
Blue Team (Defense & Detection)
- Prevention: Upgrade to version 4.9.20 or later.
- Detection: Monitor for unusual widget configuration changes by admin users. Use web application firewalls (WAF) to block common XSS payloads in widget settings.
- Hunting: Search for stored scripts in the
wp_optionstable or widget instance data.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
- File:
/wp-content/plugins/category-posts-widget/(version < 4.9.20) - Database: Entries in
wp_optionscontaining<script>tags in widget settings. - Network: Outbound connections to known malicious domains from the WordPress site.
- Logs: Admin activity logs showing widget updates with suspicious input.

Remediation & Mitigation
- Immediate: Upgrade the Category Posts Widget plugin to version 4.9.20 or later.
- Workaround: If upgrade is not possible, restrict admin access to trusted users only and disable the plugin on multisite networks.
- Long-term: Implement a Web Application Firewall (WAF) with XSS rules. Regularly audit plugin code for security flaws.
- Validation: After patching, verify that widget settings fields are properly escaped by testing with a benign XSS payload.
